Çetin Can did his ablutions and shahada prayer as soon as he heard about the July 15th coup attempt. He went to the Bosphorus Bridge to be martyred with the same enthusiasm he would have had if he was going to his own wedding.
Not being able to stay in his house after hearing the call of President Erdoğan on TV, Çetin went to his bathroom saying, “If we don’t go out today, when are we going to?” He cut his nails, shaved, did his ablutions, and a two rakat shahada prayer. “This is fate, there’s no turning back from it. I may be a martyr.” said the martyr.
After he completed his preparations, his wife Fatma said she wanted to come with him as well. So husband and wife went together to the Bosphorus Bridge. When they arrived at the entrance of the bridge, putschists were shooting at the people from toll booths.
He was shot by a sniper
His mother and sister called him and asked for his wife to come back to the house. However, he and his wife ignored his mother and instead continued to move forward. The couple became vulnerable to snipers when they moved to the Üsküdar incoming lane on the highway. He was shot in his heart by a sniper at 02:06 AM. He was taken to the hospital with an automobile. His wife was with him when he breathed in his last breath.
34 years old, Can worked in the TV industry as a chief lighting technician. Can had a will; he wanted a fruit tree to be planted on his grave. His wife made sure that his happened.
Can’s father Mustafa, a construction foreman, said the following of his son, “My son ran to his death for his flag and country as if he was going to his wedding.”
Martyr Çetin Can was buried in Kilyos Cemetery.
