Nizami Gülşen, who lost his 2 brothers and a cousin in the coup attempt, said the following, “We have the pride and pain of losing 3 members of our family as martyrs.” Gülşen stated that his brothers and cousin loved their country and added, “They went to defend their country. They said, ‘We are going to be martyrs.’ They went together, they resisted together, they died together, and they were buried together. That’s what God wanted. May this never happen again. All three of them were loyal people who loved their country. They said, ‘Let’s give them a democratic lesson,’ when they saw the putschists.

Hakan was married, with 2 children. The name Martyr Hakan Gülşen was given to the vocational and technical Anatolian high school he graduated from in Kızılcahamam, and an imam hatip high school in Menemen, İzmir.
