Halil Işılar who was going to be a soldier in three months was returning from a football match he had with his friends on July 15th. He ran on to the streets in his sports clothes on without even finding time to put his shoes on, as soon as he heard about the call of President Erdoğan. 22 years old Işılar was martyred as he was defending his country in front of the Ankara Police Headquarters Building.
His mother tried to convince him not to go out but he did not listen to her. His father followed him to the streets but Halil had disappeared already. He climbed on top of the tanks to fight putschists when he arrived at the Ankara Police Headquarters. He was martyred when a piece of shrapnel impaled him after the bombing by FETÖ.
Halil’s family waited to hear from him all night. The family rushed to the Ankara Numune Education and Research hospital after not being able to receive any word from him. His parents who received the news of his martyrdom saw that a side of their son’s face was ripped apart completely. Halil was buried in Karşıyaka Cemetery on July 18th.
“I’m so happy that my son died for his country”
The mother of 22 year old Halil, described that night to Yeni Şafak, “My son played football with his friends until 10:30 PM that night. The person who worked for the football field told them to go home because things were bad. He came home. After seeing the call of President Erdoğan, he rushed into the streets without even wearing his shoes and changing clothes. I told him not to go but he didn’t even listen. He went to the Police Headquarters with his 3 friends. My son was alive until 2:10. Tanks started moving and 3 friends lost each other. His friends searched for my son for an hour.
Around 04:20, mothers of my son’s friends called me and asked if Halil made it home. I told them he didn’t. They told me their sons made it home. I became very worried at that moment. My husband and my son’s friends went to look for Halil. We found out that he was martyred in the hospital. He was going to be a soldier in December. He was the only son of the family. I’m both sad and happy that my son was martyred. I’m so happy that my son died for his country. Halil will welcome us in heaven.”
Halil studied Electrics and Electronics in Ankara Vocational High School. Halil was a devout Beşiktaş football fan and was going to be a soldier in December. He dreamed of opening a shop when he got back from serving in the military.
