Hasan Yılmaz was one of the thousands of people who resisted against putschists in the Akıncı 4th Main Jet Base. Yılmaz was shot in the head and martyred as he tried to save his daughter.

The martyr went into the streets after the call of President Erdoğan on the night of July 15th. He went to the Ankara Akıncılar 4th Main Jet Base to resist against FETÖ members with his 16 year old daughter.

Yılmaz, who was left in the midst of a shooting in the Mürted Air base, called his wife and asked her to renounce her rights on him. Yılmaz covered his daughter so as to protect her, as the soldiers started shooting. He was shot in the head as he tried to cover his daughter. Yılmaz’s daughter was wounded in the eye. The 44 year old was shot right beside his daughter, and could not be saved despite all efforts after being taken to a hospital.

Thousands of citizens attended Yilmaz’s funeral that was held in the Ankara Kazan Grand Mosque. Yılmaz, who was married and had 2 children, was buried in the Kazan Martyrs’ Graveyard.

The name of martyr Hasan Yılmaz was given to an Imam Hatip high school in Palandöken, Erzurum.

FETÖ soldiers raided the General Staff Command on the night of the coup attempt and took Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar hostage. Tanks and helicopters then started firing into the crowd that had gathered around the quarters. Akar was rescued within the next few hours and brought to Çankaya Palace.

The Akıncı Base in Kazan was used as the headquarters of the coup attempt for taking hostages and for the bombings. Upon learning this, the citizens surrounded the Akıncı Base and set fire to hay bales and narrowed the sight of the warplanes. They also gathered in front of the base and resisted the putschists. The putschists at the base shot at the crowd as it grew even bigger. Five people were martyred and 40 were wounded.
