July 15 Coup Attempt Hüseyin Kalkan

Hüseyin Kalkan

Police officer Hüseyin Kalkan tried to prevent tanks from entering the Ankara Police Headquarters with TOMAs and trucks on the night of July 15th coup attempt. Kalkan was martyred by putschist soldiers’ bullets.

Kalkan, who worked as a police officer at the Ankara Police Headquarters, was in the Brach Directorate of Protecting Statesmen. He was called back to work after arriving home in the evening. He managed to enter the building from the back side since the roads were blocked. Hüseyin Kalkan and his colleagues managed to pull TOMAs onto the roads and trucks to the front side of the headquarters. Even though his friends offered to go behind the trucks to hide, Kalkan said, “There’s nothing beyond death,” and risked death demonstrating a remarkable example of courage.

He said “Soldiers and police are brothers” and was hit by 7 bullets

The police officer chanted “God is the greatest” and stood in front of a tank, as the attacks from the putschists were becoming more frequent later on in the night. Hüseyin Kalkan yelled, “Soldiers and police are brothers,” and was shot upon the order of the putschist colonel. His colleague saw a smile on Kalkan’s face as he fell on his back to the ground. He wanted to get him up and said, “Don’t smile, get up,” but Hüseyin Kalkan had already reached martyrdom.

His brother Cengiz Kalkan searched all the hospitals in the morning to find out what had happened to his brother. He found his brother at the Hacettepe Medical Facility at 6:00 AM. When asking the doctors about his brother’s status, he received the answer, “He came here half dead, we couldn’t save him.” Doctors removed seven bullets from his body.

The martyr was sent to eternity with a funeral held in the Kocatepe Mosque. Kalkan’s body was buried in the Elvanköy Graveyard in Etimesgut.

“He used to give ice cream to children”

The 45-year-old attended all operations in Cizre during his service in the Special Operations that started in 1992. He worked as a guard in the Ministry of National Defense for 17 years.

He never married but his love for children was known by everyone. The people close to him say that he liked giving ice cream to children to make them happy.

The name of Martyr Hüseyin Kalkan was given to an Anatolian Imam Hatip high school in İzmir.
