Mahmut Coşkunsu had come to Istanbul from Azerbaijan. He carried the wounded on his back during the coup attempt by FETÖ members. Putschist traitors martyred him by shooting him in the head.

Coşkunsu went into the streets for his country on July 15th as soon as he heard about the events taking place. Coşkunsu did his ablutions and then went to Kısıklı. There he learned that President Erdoğan was coming to the airport. He headed to the airport and faced putschists on the Bosphorus Bridge. He helped those who were wounded until the early morning of July 16th. One of the bullets fired by traitorous soldiers hit Coşkunsu. The G3 bullet hit him in his neck and had already been martyred when admitted to the hospital at 06:55 AM.

He used to call Erdoğan “father”

Coşkunsu was known for his love of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and how he even called the President “father”. He would come from Azerbaijan to attend Erdoğan’s rallies as much as he could. A 43 year old businessman from Giresun, he worked in the construction industry. He also had a factory for iron joinery and was married with a fellow Azerbaijani Nigar Coşkunsu. They had a 5 month old son together.

“I’m proud of my husband but my son will never say ‘dad’ in his life, I’m sorry for that.” said Coşkunsu’s wife Nigar. “We came here for the Ramadan holiday. We were going to return to Baku on July 20th. My husband went to Kısıklı that night as if he was going to a rally. He loved Tayyip Erdoğan, he used to call him “father”. He would attend all of Erdoğan’s rallies from Baku. He wouldn’t miss any of them. He took me to many of them, as well. He loved his country and his president. He heard about the coup attempt on social media as he was returning from a family visit. He dropped us home in Umraniye, did his ablutions and headed to Kısıklı. His brother-in-law Murat Civan, was with him too. According to him, he carried the wounded people to hospitals. He put himself on the line, I’m proud of him. But my 5 month old son will never say ‘dad’ in his life. I’m sorry about that.”

The martyr was buried in the Istanbul Karacaahmet Graveyard on July 17th.

The name of martyr Mehmet Coşkunsu was given to a middle school in Umraniye, Istanbul.

News of one of the bloodiest nights in Turkey, the July 15 coup attempt, first spread with the disturbance on the Fatih Sultan Mehmet and Bosporus Bridges. Citizens realizing that both bridges were occupied by traitor FETÖ soldiers resisted, saying: “We won’t surrender this land to you”, on the call of President Erdoğan to the public to claim the streets.
