Mehmet Gülşen headed to Beştepe from Kızılcahamam upon the call of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the night of the July 15th coup attempt. Saying, “We are going to give them a lesson of democracy,” before leaving the house. Mehmet was martyred with his brother and cousin, with whom he went into the streets with.

61 year old Mehmet was a father of two, he married with his second wife after losing his first wife 3 years ago. His daughter works in the City Planning and his son works in the tourism industry. Mehmet also had a 6-year-old grandson.

“One hand on the tank, one hand on the flag”

Mehmet went to the Presidential Complex with his brother and cousin upon the call of President Erdoğan, he was very excited and did not want to go back home that night. His daughter Buket, stated that they contacted their father through their uncle who was with him, and their uncle said, “Our one hand is on the tank, and our other hand is on the flag. When are we going to go outside, if not now?”

Buket said her father was a very lively person who loved his country. Before his death, Mehmet said, “People should die in an honorable way so that those who are left behind shall be proud.” He went on to die in the way he dreamed of, he was martyred after the bombing on the Presidential Complex, with his brother and cousin.

Mehmet Gülşen was buried in Kızılcahamam on Sunday, July 17th along with his brother Hakan Gülşen (43), and his cousin and brother in law Lütfi Gülşen (63).

The name Martyr Mehmet Gülşen was given to a private kindergarten in İzmir.
