Special Operations Police Officer Murat Ellik was preparing for marriage before he was martyred by putschists at the Special Operations Depeartment Headquarters. Ellik was wounded in the past while serving the country to fight against terrorists in Sur.
The 25 year old police officer, who was from Kars, was home on the night of the coup attempt. Ellik was urgently called in to work after the coup attempt begun. Ellik went to the headquarters without losing any time. He had started working as a police officer in 2009 and had been living away from his family for 7 years. He talked to his brother for the last time on the night of the coup attempt, “I’m going to work. I’ll call you later.” He was unable to speak with his father one last time.
Ellik was wounded by the bomb attack by the putschist soldiers, after going to the Special Operations headquarters. Murat was taken to the hospital and died a martyr’s death there. His family received the news at 05:00 AM. He was buried in his hometown of Erzurum after his body was received by his father, Osman Ellik.

Police Officer Osman Ellik said that Special Operations was a passion for his son rather than just a job. He said that his son served in military operations in Southeast Anatolia actively and added, “I’ve never wanted my son to be a police officer as I knew the hardships of the job. He was studying business, he wanted to start working and became a police officer. He joined all the operations in the Southeast. He was even injured in some of them. He stayed in the hospital for 5 days in Diyarbakır, but we found out about that after Murat was martyred.
The martyr was planning to get married with his fiancée in 2 months, before he was martyred by putschist traitors.
The name of martyr Murat Ellik was given to an elementary school in Erzurum.
