Osman Yılmaz, who was in Çengelköy during FETÖ’s coup attempt, was martyred by putschists when he was shot in the head while trying to help his friend Halil Kantarcı, who was severely injured in the attack and later also martyred.
Osman Yılmaz was born in and lived in Çengelköy for 46 years. He was a father of 3 and owned a textile business. He was shot in his mouth as he was trying to pick up his severely injured friend Halil Kantarcı. Yılmaz had been receiving lessons 4 days a week in Arabic, fiqh, and tafsir for 15 years. Yılmaz and his brother Oğuz were trying to defend the Istanbul Çengelköy Police Station where shootings occurred on the night of the coup attempt.
“Don’t worry, everything is going to be alright in the morning”
The 46 year old owned the Lider Textile firm in İsmetpaşa, Pendik. Yılmaz tried to soothe his wife Şule Yulmaz, “Don’t worry, everything is going to be alright in the morning.” According to his wife, Osman Yılmaz would always say, “I will die and you will take care of my children.” His words became real on the night of July 15th. She said she could not stand her husband’s words and added, “We loved each other dearly. He would watch me and our children sleep every night. He would read the Quran out loud at night. We went to haj in 2003. His only dream was to be a martyr. He prayed to one day become a martyr. He died a martyr’s death while he was being embraced by our haji friend. God accepted his prayers.”
Martyr Osman Yılmaz was buried in Çengelköy.
The name of martyr Osman Yılmaz was given to an Anatolian Imam Hatip high school in Maltepe, Istanbul.
