July 15 Coup Attempt Resul Kaptancı

Resul Kaptancı

Resul Kaptancı who sold phyllo for a living, was martyred by 4 bullets fired by putschists in front of the General Staff Headquarters on the night of the July 15th coup attempt. Resul was planning to proposed to the girl he loved, on the following day of July 17th.

He became aware of the events of the night when he heard the sounds of low flying F-16s controlled by traitorous putcshists. He went outside like other patriots, after hearing the call of President Erdoğan. He called and talked to his brother Mehmet, on the phone when he was on the road. His brother told him, “Come home, brother. Things are bad.” Kaptancı replied, “Don’t worry, brother. Renounce your rights for me in this.” Resul also called his father to get his blessings as well.

“What is a coup when we are here?!”

Resul shared the following words from his social media account before he headed to the General Staff Headquarters, “What is a coup when we are here?! Don’t let these traitors take our country. Go into the streets.” He went to the General Staff Headquarters with his friends, and was shot and martyred by putschists in both of his arms, his chest, and his head.

His family found his body in the morgue of the Ankara Numune Hospital two days later. He was buried in Haymana Yurtbeyli Village after his funeral.

Resul was going to ask for the hand of the girl he loved on July 16th. He had prepared his flowers, chocolate box, and ring; and was looking forward to that moment with huge excitement. He told his friend on the night of the coup attempt, “I think I might not get together with the woman I love.”

Putschists wanting to seize the General Staff headquarters, staged a raid on the premises. As civilians poured down into the streets, they clashed with the on-duty soldiers and police officers. In order to thwart the people’s attempts to foil the coup, putschists rained bullets on the crowds from helicopters. Many citizens were martyred at the General Staff’s campus, where some of the longest and most intense clashes took place.
