July 15 Coup Attempt Sümer Deniz

Sümer Deniz

Sümer Deniz rushed to the Presidential Complex with his friend who he woke up saying, “There’s a coup happening!” He was martyred by putschist traitors who shot him in the heart.

Deniz was out of town on vacation with his wife and children and went to play football with his friends on the night of the coup attempt. When he got back from the match, he heard about the traitorous coup attempt by FETÖ members. Deniz decided to go into the streets on the call of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He woke up his friend saying, “There’s a coup happening.” He said to his friend, “How are you staying here? I can’t possibly stay here.” He took his friend and went to the Presidential Complex in Beştepe.

He was shot in the heart

Deniz was shot in the heart by a helicopter controlled by putschists, shooting at the Presidential Complex around 02:00 AM. When his wife, Emine Deniz, called him at 01:50 AM, someone else answered the phone and told her that Deniz had been injured. His friends took Sümer Deniz to Turgut Özal Hospital at first but the hospital did not admit him. He was then taken to Gazi Hospital, but his heart stopped before they could reach the hospital and he was martyred on the road.

The 42 year old Deniz, who was a father of 2 children, was buried on July 18th.

His wife Emine Deniz said this when speaking of her husband, “His heart was so beautiful, and he was shot there.”

“I miss you so much, dad”

The martyr’s 4 year old son, Emir Deniz, wrote a short but meaningful letter and put it by the grave of his father. In the letter, Emir said, “I’ve missed you so much, dad. You can’t even imagine. You would trick us and go fight even if we were in Ankara. I’m glad you were not just injured because then you wouldn’t be able to see the beautiful face of heaven.”

The name of martyr Sümer Deniz was given to an Anatolian Imam Hatip high school in Fethiye, Muğla.
