July 15 Coup Attempt Uhud Kadir Işık

Uhud Kadir Işık

In the morning of July 15th, Uhud Kadir Işık had taken the entrance exam for the Turkish Military Academy for sergeants’, and was martyred on the same day, while helping the wounded in front of the Parliament.

Uhud had taken the entrance exam to become a medical sergeant on the morning of July 15th. When his father asked about the exam, he answered, “The exam went very well. I passed the physical exam, I’m going to have an interview as well. Most probably, I will pass it too.” But on the night of July 15th, everything was dramatically changed. Uhud and his father arrived at Kızılay Square after a 3 hour walk from Aktepe, Keçiören, upon the call of President Erdoğan. When they arrived at Kızılay towards the morning, they saw tanks and crushed cars. Uhud’s father said to him, “There’s a problem, let’s go back,” but Uhud replied, “If we weren’t going to finish this, why did we come already?”

He helped the wounded as a medic.

17 Year old Uhud, who graduated from the medical high school’s anesthesia department, proceeded to help the wounded, even though his father called him to come back. His father hid inside a sentry box due to the heavy fire from a helicopter. He tried calling his sons phone and when he couldn’t reach him, he rushed to the General Staff building, vaulting over the barriers. He finally found Uhud badly wounded. Uhud was on the ground bleeding, he had been shot in the back three times. They took Uhud to the hospital via a civilian’s car, but he died at the hospital.

One of the first targets attacked by the putschist soldiers in Ankara was the General Staff Headquarters. Armed with tanks, putschists started shooting at civilians who rushed to the General Staff Headquarters. With orders “to retalliate,” police crews launched an operation against the putschists, during which helicopters that arrived at the scene provided support. Many civilians were martyred in front of the General Staff Headquarters, and clashes lasted until the morning hours.

“I will be the first martyr of our village”

One of the youngest martyrs of the vicious coup attempt, Uhud was buried in the village of Kalfat, in the district Orta in Çankırı. His father told the story of his commitment to the people in his village as follows, “Uhud was still a kid. One day while we were driving back from the village, he asked me about the graves with flags he saw in other villages’ cemeteries, ‘Why did they put flags there?’ And I said, ‘They are the graves of soldiers and police who were martyred fighting against terrorists.” Why isn’t there any in our village then?” he asked. I said, “Because there’s no one from our village, who has been martyred.” Then he said, “Father, I will be the first martyr of our village.”

The name Martyr Uhud Kadir Işık was given to an imam hatip high school in his hometown, Çankırı.
