Vedat Barceğci tried going to the airport with his motorbike so that he could resist against the coup attempt, but was forced to turn back because the roads were blocked. Barceğci was shot and martyred by a helicopter near the Doğan Media Group headquarters, where putschists attacked.

Minutes later, a military helicopter flew over the crowd that Barceğci was in on the TEM highway. The helicopter controlled by putschists started shooting at the crowd. Barceğci was shot instantly. His friend Serkan Çağlayan took Vedat to a hospital near Esenyurt, however Barceğci lost his life in the hospital.
The 28 year old silver manufacturer Vedat Barceğci was a father of one. He was buried in Sultangazi.
