The first diesel engine manufacturer of Turkey, TÜMOSAN, said it agreed to sign and deal with the Defense Industry Undersecretariat on Tuesday, February 17, in connection with Turkey’s first domestic main battle tank project, the Altay.

The Turkish Undersecretariat  of Defense Industry is expected to sign an agreement with Turkey's biggest diesel and tractor engine  producer, TÜMOSAN, about producing motors for Turkish indigenous Altay tanks. The agreement is of great importance for using domestic technology for the country’s defense industry.

The negotiations to produce engines and powertrains actually started in August 2014, following which, TÜMOSAN announced through its statement to the Public Disclosure Platform, or KAP, that both sides agreed to sign a deal.

TÜMOSAN's statement to the Public Disclosure Platform, or KAP, said that after the signing ceremony today, the company will soon officially start developing the Altay Tank Power Group.

The company will design the power group for the tanks, develop them, produce the prototypes and qualified them by integration tests within the specified period.

The agreement between the two Turkish establishments is being considered as one of the most significant example of using local technologies in the Turkish defense industry as the government supports the local production for this sector.

Within the development period, TÜMOSAN will design the diesel engines between 300 to 1600 horsepower, or hp, including one thousand pieces of 500 hp tank engines. At the end of the project, the company is expected to have the experience to develop similar projects.
