A special class of Bougainvillea trees were put up for sale in Turkey's Mediterranean coastal city of Bodrum, as the seller sold each of them for $7,500.

The mushroom-type bougainvillea trees, which bloom in five colors on the same branch, are rare in Turkey.

Landscape architect Deniz Baykal, who has been working for the flower company for nearly 20 years, said they sold six of five bougainvillea trees within short time after making them available for sale.

These rare trees are indispensable to the owners of tourist facilities and villas.

“We put up eight bougainvillea trees for sale and six of them sold within two weeks," Baykal said.

He said there are bougainvillea trees that bloom in two or three colors, but “four-color bougainvillea trees are rare, not only in Turkey but around the world."

Baykal said that bougainvillea is a common symbol of Bodrum, and almost every house in the region has a bougainvillea tree in the yard.

"After seeing great demand, we decided to cultivate a new kind of bougainvillea and have succeeded in cultivating a tree that blooms in five colors: white, purple, pink, red and orange," Baykal said.

The trees are selling out at $7,500, or 22,000 Turkish lira, typically the price of a second-hand car.
