18 dead, 2 missing after refugee boat sinks off Turkish coast

ed when their makeshift wooden boat sank off the Turkish coast on Thursday.



The boat was en route from the coast town of Dikili to Greek island of Lesbos when it capsized and sank.



Twenty-one others were rescued from the half-sunken boat with the help of a coast guard speedboat acting on a tip from the town residents.



Survivors said there were 11 more on board the boat; some were traveling inside the boat cabin.



Two speedboats and two helicopters launched search-and-rescue efforts to find 11 refugees who went missing in the accident.



A team of divers were also directed at the scene to look for those, who were travelling in the boat cabin. The divers found nine bodies in the sea.



It is unknown how many refugees the boat cabin was hosting. It is also uncertain how many the boat was carrying when it set out.



The nationalities of the refugees who died and went missing in the fatal accident were not stated.
