The jury of Anadolu Agency's third international photo contest will gather in the famous tourist spot of Cappadocia in Turkey's central Nevsehir province to select winners March 19-21.

The Istanbul Photo Awards 2017 -- with the official sponsorship of Turkish Airlines and support from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, TIKA -- is not only a photo competition but also an event promoting Turkey.

The jury will select winners in news and sports photos as well as the four new categories of nature and environment-single, nature and environment-story, portrait-single and portrait-multiple.

A Young Photographer award will also be given for the first time to a winner under age 28.

After the winners are announced, a total of 16 people -- including young photojournalists from Anadolu Agency and national media and students from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University's Department of Photography -- will participate in a press photography workshop March 24-25.

On March 26, the Istanbul Photo Awards Talks event will be organized with the participation of Russian photojournalist Yuri Kozyrev from Noor Agency and highly experienced photojournalist Stanly Greene -- who will share their experiences.

The two will also meet with photo lovers at the event, which will be held at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University's Sedat Hakki Eldem Auditorium.

The first exhibit of the award-winning photos will open April 2 at the university's Tophane-i Amire Culture and Art Center at the University.

Among this year's jury members are Kozyrev, famous French newsmagazine Paris Match's Senior Digital Editor Marion Mertens, and Cameron Spencer, a Getty Images sport correspondent.

After working as Paris Match's deputy news editor for 15 years, Mertens became its digital editor and directs the newsmagazine's Internet, tablet and mobile formats. Before joining Paris Match in 1998, Mertens worked at Le Figaro, l'Express, and VSD magazine.

Getty Images' Spencer has been doing professional sport and portrait photography since 2004.

Shanghai Center of Photography Director Liu Heung Shing, Getty Images executive Georges De Keerle, AFP Photo Business Development Director Michel Scotto, curator Liza Faktor, famous for her multimedia work, as well as Anadolu Agency's Visual News Editor-in-Chief Ahmet Sel and Photo Editor Firat Yurdakul are also among the jury members.

Last year, photographers Abd Doumany, whose image of an injured Syrian boy was chosen as Photo of the Year by an international jury, and Sergey Ponomarev, who caught images of refugees arriving the Greek island of Lesbos for The New York Times, won the single news category and later a Pulitzer Prize.

In 2015, Daniel Berehulak was the winner of the competition's "Photo of the Year" with his coverage on the Ebola epidemic in Liberia after his work won the Pulitzer Prize.
