President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with EU Council President Donald Tusk and EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Thursday in Brussels, Belgium.

They discussed the current situation of Turkey-EU relations and possible upcoming steps toward Turkey’s accession to the bloc.

"We discussed the need to cooperate. I put the question of human rights in the centre of our discussions with Erdogan," European Council chief Donald Tusk wrote in a tweet following the meeting but gave no further details.

Erdoğan is in Belgium for the NATO leaders’ summit and is heading Turkey’s delegation.

The Turkish delegation will join the opening ceremony for the new NATO headquarters.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also met with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday in Brussels.

The two heads of state agreed to boost annual trade to 20 billion euros ($22 billion) and to improve Ankara's diplomatic ties with the European Union, Turkish presidential sources said.

Erdoğan and Macron held a 45 minute meeting at the Wiltcher's Steigenberger Hotel.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu also attended the meeting, which was closed to the press.
