Migrant dies after small boat sinks off Turkish coastal town

Another boat carrying Syrian migrants bound for Greece's Kos Island capsizes near Turkey's southwestern coast; one migrant dead, one missing

One migrant died and another went missing when their boat capsized off Turkey's popular coastal town of Bodrum very early Friday . The remaining 10 immigrants on aboard survived with the help of town residents who saw the sinking boat.



Turkish media said when the fatal accident happened, the migrant boat was en route to the island of Kos, Greece.



The 4-meter long fiberglass boat, reprtedly packed with 12 Syrian migrants, sank at around 12:30 a.m. in the Mediterranean Sea after taking on water.



Majority on the capsized boat survived by swimming back to shore in the town. Paramedics immediately responded to the scene, acting on a tip-off from the town residents who helped the survivors come ashore.



Three immigrants, including an infant, were hospitalized after primary care on the shore.



The migrant, who died in the accident, was identified as a 35-year-old woman, whose heart stopped after swallowing a huge amount of water. The health crew performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation to restore and maintain her breathing for nearly 20 minutes. She died despite frantic efforts by paramedics.



A Turkish Coast Guard boat launched search-and-rescue efforts to find the missing. The efforts are still underway off the coastal town.
