PM orders Foreign Ministry to act over violation of Turkish air space

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has ordered the Foreign Ministry to act according to the framework of NATO and the United Nations over the downing of a war plane

The Prime Minister, originally scheduled to meet at 11 with the President to submit the new cabinet list, has mobilized after a Russian war plane violated Turkish air space.



Turkey is expected to call for a UN Security Council meeting to discuss the violation of its air space.



Prime Minister's office said that Davutoğlu has been briefed by the Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar and Foreign Minister Feridun Sibirlioğlu about the downing of the plane that the Presidential office identified as a Russian-made SU-24.



The presidency also said that the origin of the war plane has remained unclear. It is not known if it belonged to Russian or Syrian air forces.



Turkish military sources said the fighter jet was downed near the Syrian border after it violated Turkey's air space. The reports said jet was downed in line with rules of engagement after violating Turkish airspace.



Sources said the plane of unknown orgin was warned 10 times in five minutes before it was shot down.



Two pilots reportedly ejected with their parachutes. It is not known whether they survived.



Ankara may summon the Russian ambassador to ask if the plane is linked to the Russian air force.
