A suspected envelope, mailed from Britain to a police station in the central province of Sivas, stirred shock and panic among officials.

Officers took security precautions on the spot after receiving the suspicious envelope, which only read Great Britain as the return address and the police station as the receiver.

The police did not open the suspicious-looking envelope and called Turkey's disaster management unit, or AFAD, for support.

An emergency squad from AFAD immediately responded to the police station’s call. Masked experts in special outfits, conducted first tests on the envelope, which claimed to contain an unknown substance, without opening it.

The specially-guarded envelop was handed over to the team, sent from the Environment Ministry for a thorough examination at a public health laboratory in Ankara following the initial exam of the powder which was conducted the on the site.

The two postmen on motorcycle, who were assumed as being exposed to the powder suspected to be inside the closed envelope, have been held for observation at the hospital of the Cumhuriyet University Medical Science Faculty after an initial examination at a province hospital.

The police launched an investigation after taking the suspicious envelope.
