Turkey to launch counterterrorism operations in southeast

Counterterrorism operations targeting PKK terrorists will be launched across Diyarbakır

A curfew has been applied across 26 villages in the Lice, Hazro, Kulp and Silvan districts of Turkey’s southeastern Diyarbakır province.

The Diyarbakır Governorate said in a statement that counterterrorism operations would be conducted to neutralize Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) terrorists who carrying out activities in the Hazro, Kulp, Silvan and lice districts.

The operations will destroy shelters, hideouts and warehouse areas and anti-aircraft positions used by the terrorists and seize their materials.

“In order to ensure the safety and security of life and property of the people in the regions where operations are conducted and to protect civilian citizens, a curfew has been enacted. Observance of this curfew is critical in terms of the safety of citizens and their property,” the statement said.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States.

The PKK has been conducting armed violence in the southeastern part of Turkey since 1984. More than 40,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the three-decade long conflict.
