Turkey's on-going visa crisis with the United States is unnecessary, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on Wednesday, adding that two allies need to solve the issue with mutual understanding.

Speaking at a joint news conference with his Portuguese counterpart, Çavuşoğlu said it was not right to punish people unrelated to the tension.

The U.S. Embassy on Oct. 8 evening stated that "applications from Turkey were halted for an indefinite period." The decision came after the arrest of FETÖ-affiliated U.S. Consulate General employee Metin Topuz.

The Turkish Embassy in the U.S. announced that processing non-immigrant visa applications have been suspended in retaliation to the American move.
