The airtight machine called “Iron Lung" enables Paul Alexander to breathe, who contracted polio, an infantile paralysis, as a five-year-old in 1952, when the last outbreak in the United States took place. Alexander has spent almost his whole life in this machine, which is fastened tightly around his neck, so he can draw in oxygen to his lungs. Polio destroys patients' central nervous system and respiratory function. The disease was eradicated thanks to a vaccine developed in 1979.
