Peruvian police downed a drug-laden plane after trading gunfire with drug-trafficking suspects in a remote area of central Peru called the Valley of Pichis Palcazu in Oxapampa province. Local media reported that authorities seized 70 kg of cocaine from the plane, but believe the suspects hid at least another 200 kg of drugs since the planes have a capacity of 300 kg. One suspect, allegedly a Colombian man, escaped while the other suspect, the 58-year-old Bolivian pilot, was shot and taken into custody by police. In 2015, a law went into effect that facilitated the downing of small planes suspected of carrying illegal drugs. Previously on Saturday, Colombian arrested Peruvian drug lord Gerson Galvez, alias "Caracol" - the Spanish word for "snail." Peru is the world's second-largest supplier of cocaine, according to the United States military.
