More than 2,000 Egyptian women have been detained since the 2013 military coup against President Mohamed Morsi, the Revolutionary Coalition for Egypt's Women said this week.

In a statement, the group also said it has documented 20 cases of rape against female political prisoners in Egyptian jails.

“Sixty-two women are still being held behind bars," the Cairo-based group said, adding that the women are being jailed on “fabricated" charges.

According to the statement, 90 women have been killed by Egyptian security forces since Morsi's ouster.

Anadolu Agency could not obtain comment from Egyptian authorities on the allegations.

Egypt has been roiled by turmoil since the military deposed Morsi, the country's first freely elected president, in 2013.
