Five people from the same family were killed Sunday when their home in Iraq’s northern city of Mosul was hit by an airstrike, a local activist told Anadolu Agency.

“Five people from the same family -- including one child and one woman -- were killed; their bodies are still under the debris,” Mohamed Hussein al-Heyali, an activist and Mosul resident, said.

Al-Heyali added that the home that was struck is located near the Great al-Nuri Mosque in western Mosul’s Old City district.

Currently, only the Iraqi military and a U.S.-led coalition are carrying out airstrikes in and around Mosul, with the ostensible aim of retaking the city’s western half from the Daesh terrorist group.

Al-Heyali’s assertions, however, have yet to be verified by any official sources.

The Iraqi military remains engaged in a wide-ranging campaign -- launched last October -- to recapture the entire city of Mosul, which Daesh overran in mid-2014.
