As many as 63 countries have been pursuing the petroleum and natural gas of Iraq; which is the real motivation of their participation in the ongoing Mosul operation, President of the International Association for Energy Economics Professor Dr. Gürkan Kumbaroğlu has said.

Kumbaroğlu indicated the big amount of oil and natural gas reserves in Mosul in his speech to Turkish Star newspaper.

"The Western countries seem to be attempting to bring peace to Iraq while they are trying to take a share from the oil in the region. Mosul is like an island on oil and natural gas reserves," he said. "Only one reserve in Mosul has a capacity of natural gas which would be enough for Europe for 25 years," he added.

"It is a fiction. The Western countries first allowed a group of terrorists of a couple of thousands of members, to occupy half of Iraq and Syria. Then they let the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)-affiliated Democratic Union Party (PYD) to conduct its so-called 'counter-terrorism fight' against Daesh. Now they try to seize the natural resources there. And the key point is who will control the Syrian corridor, " Kumbaroğlu said.

"The average natural gas consumption of Turkey is 50 billion cubic meters, while the same figure is 400 billion for Europe. Now, new technology is capable of showing where the reserves are located," he said.

"It is estimated that there are 8-10 trillion cubic meters of natural gas in the region, which is the natural gas consumption of Europe for 25 years," Kumbaroğlu stated.

"The geopolitical position of Syria is due to being on the route of the passage of new energy sources of Middle East and Mediterranean," said the President of the International Association for Energy Economics.

"Also there are 800 billion cubic meters of natural gas in a reserve in Egypt and Israel. The East Mediterranean is full of petrol and natural gas," he added.
