Germany’s defense ministry announced on Monday that it has restarted training and military support for Peshmerga forces, which it had been providing since 2014, after it was suspended last week.

Germany had suspended its military assistance and training to Peshmerga forces due to the uncertainty in northern Iraq as a result of the Iraqi Central Government’s military operation following the illegitimate independence referendum held by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Sept. 25.

There are over 200 German troops in Northern Iraq to provide Peshmerga forces with training and military support against the Daesh terrorist organization. Although it has been agreed that the weapons supplied by Germany will not be used except in the fight against Daesh, the Peshmerga have used weapons provided by Germany against the Iraqi central forces, which caused debates in Germany. German troops’ presence in the region and the restarting of the military training have been criticized in the country.

Germany has so far provided Peshmerga forces with weapons and ammunition valued at €90 million.
