Millions of residents in Syria's two largest cities have no access to running water due to worsening security, namely blocked access to water facilities in Daesh-held areas, and technical issues near water sources on the outskirts of Damascus and Aleppo.

The Ain al-Fijeh Water Establishment, which provides 5.5 million people in Damascus and its surrounding areas with drinking water, has remained non-operational since December 22 last year, according to a statement by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Citing bombardment in the area, Syria's Red Crescent and technical crews were forced to halt maintenance work in the water facility.

The UN emphasized in a statement the urgent need to rapidly complete maintenance work in Ain al-Fijeh.

In Aleppo, 1.8 million people have remained without water since January 14 due to the water facilities, located in Daesh-controlled territories east of the city, being out of order.

Daesh prevented maintenance crews from entering the facilities, and as a result, the UN and other aid foundations were forced to send water tanks to the water-deprived areas, according to the same statement.
