Nearly 700 unarmed soldiers exiting the General Staff Building surrendering to the police.

Nearly 100 soldiers with different ranks, including the Lieutenant, who supported the coup attempt at the 2nd Army Command in Malatya, surrendered to the police at 10:30 a.m. FETÖ members who used the Akıncı Air Base during the coup attempt began leaving the airbase at 10:41 a.m. after the coup attempt had failed.

During the same hours, Bingöl 49th Commando Brigade Commander Brigadier Yunus Kotaman and Bolu 2nd Commando Brigade Commander Brigadier General İsmail Güneşer were detained.

Around 11:00, Minister of Interior Efkan Ala discharged the Commander of the Coast Guard, Rear Admiral Hakan Üstem who acted jointly with coup plotters.

  • The court released FETÖ’s Air Forces imam Adil Öksüz who had been arrested at the Akıncı Air Base in the Kazan district of Ankara which was one of the epicenters of the July 15th coup attempt. Although an arrest warrant was issued again after he was released, Öksüz is yet to be caught. It was found that Kemal Batmaz, former General Manager of the Kaynak Kağıt Inc., managed the activities of putschist soldiers at the Akıncı Air Base along with fugitive Adil Öksüz. Camera recordings revealed that Batmaz had gone to the U.S. with Adil Öksüz on July 11th and returned to Turkey with him two days later.

Putschists in Ankara started to escape when their occupation attempts were repelled in the morning. Civilians started to chase the tanks with their private vehicles. In the meantime, a civilian excavation truck struck a putschist tank that was trying to escape.

One of the most critical points of the coup attempt was Akıncı Air Base located in Kazan. Both the chief of General Staff and some of the commanders of the armed forces were held hostage there. After the coup attempt was repelled, an operation was carried out at Akıncı Air Base and the putschists who tried to escape were captured.

In the initial phases of the coup attempt, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and the Bosporus Bridge were the places where the fiercest clashes broke out. Putschists opened fire on the people who came to the bridges and also fired artillery from the tanks in the morning. Putschists surrendered after the coup was repelled to a large extent on the morning of July 16. The traffic on the bridges returned to normal once the putschists surrendered.

Mehmet Köse, a driver for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, said it took him five minutes to learn how to drive the tank that the people had taken over from the treacherous soldiers during the July 15 FETÖ coup attempt = and was left on the E-5 highway. He said: “Before [that night], I saw tanks from the outside only. But I didn’t hesitate one bit. I tried to drive it like a normal vehicle and, by the grace of God, I did it.”

The assassination team that raided President Erdoğan’s hotel in Marmaris during the first hours of the coup attempt, escaped from the region. The 37 person assassination team escaped and disappeared without a trace in two groups after the coup attempt failed. The assassination team was headed by Brigadier General Gökhan Şahin Sönmezateş.

The number 3 tanker aircraft returned to the İncirlik Air Base. Previously, it had taken off from the İncirlik Air Base and supported the coup attempt by refueling putschist F-16 fighter jets that flew over the Central Black Sea Region and Ankara.
