Ways to stop the genocide in Myanmar

It was loudly voiced in the last few years that the oppression aimed at Arakan Muslims (Rohingyas) living in Myanmar’s Rakhine State was on the verge of genocide. In a notice released by the London-based Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) in March 2013, it was stated that rising propaganda against the Rohingyas is concerning: "We believe a third massacre against the Muslim minority group is highly likely." Stating that a genocide is underhandedly happening in Myanmar, the IHRC had asked the “international community” to immediately stop the third wave of violence.

According to reports prepared by nongovernmental organizations, the Rohingyas are in the final stages of the genocide process. The reports state that a long-term genocide strategy is being applied in addition to rape, torture, massacres, arbitrary detentions, seizure of land and ghettoization. Leaked government documents also show that the "mass destruction" plan was prepared at the highest level. The regime and Buddhist fascists are trying to wipe out the Rohingyas. Unfortunately, it appears that this conspiracy has mass support. The genocide calendar is being applied in stages. The international community refraining from effectively interfering in the process is encouraging their destruction plan. The Rohingya freedom fighters thus say, "We are in the last stage before a full-fledged genocide. We have to maintain our numbers."

In an article I read recently, it said, "Myanmar leaders don't need to sweat it. They have a powerful friend: China." China has long been providing diplomatic protection to Myanmar. China, one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, is preventing deterrent decisions from being taken against Myanmar. China gets support from Russia as well from time to time. What a great distribution: The U.S. vetoes decisions against Israel; China protects Myanmar and, of course, the others protect their own guilty friends. Oppression against the oppressed in this world carries on through this damned system. Remember how in 1994, 75 percent of the Tutsi people in Rwanda were destroyed within a mere three months.

China has strategic investments in Myanmar, primarily oil and natural gas pipeline investments. Without strong support from China, Myanmar's old – but still largely determining – military regime wouldn't possibly be able to continue. The Myanmar-China pipeline is very important for China. This pipeline is an alternative to the Malay Strait patrolled by the U.S. The Myanmar pipeline is of strategic importance to supply energy to China from the Indian Ocean through land. If we were to remind that this line reaches China through Rakhine and Shan, the reason why the Rohingyas have been put through genocide in the last few years will be better grasped. Rakhine is the first output point of the line. The line has quite an extensive impact on China's "One Belt, One Road" cooperation projects in Myanmar. Hence, China is a key ally for Myanmar.

In our previous articles we had asked the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to take deterrent decisions to stop the genocide aimed at Rohingya Muslims. The OIC could force China to use its influence over Myanmar. Energy-rich OIC members, especially Saudi Arabia, are major suppliers of the China-Myanmar pipeline. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar have investments in Myanmar. Likewise, Iran is also among China's suppliers.

Turkey's means and diplomatic moves alone may not be enough to stop this genocide process. The OIC's energy-rich counties need to give strong support to Turkey's leading initiatives. The OIC must imminently begin taking deterrent measures against Myanmar and supporting countries to stop the more than one million Rohingya Muslims from being publicly destroyed. Otherwise, the OIC will have the blood of the innocent people killed in Arakan on its hands.
