When Donald Trump became president he withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement, which current American leader Joe Biden reversed. Now, the Biden administration made certain commitments at the summit in Glasgow to combat climate change. Although Biden may prance around as the pioneer in the fight against climate change, other parties, primarily Europe, have serious doubts on whether America can really deliver on its promises. Because, there is a fundamental disparity in how the Democrats and Republicans approach climate change. Most Republicans don’t even believe it exists, while advocating that the regulations being made to combat it are detrimental to the American economy. On the other hand, some bills Biden wants to pass through Congress are being sabotaged by Democrats known for having close ties with the fossil fuel industry
The possibility that the Democrats may lose elections in 2022 and 2024 has Europe in a blue funk. The fact that a Republican candidate won the governor's election in Virginia on Nov. 2 shows that the Democrats will have a very hard time indeed in the 2022 elections. Democrats currently hold a razor-thin majority in the House and Senate. In November 2022, elections will be held for 34 Senate seats, 435 House seats, and 36 state governorships. Republicans are likely to win a majority in Congress in 2022. If this possibility materializes, the fight against climate change could go down the drain.
The deepening political polarization in America is being governed by a “civil war” psychology. And both sides are prepared to fight to the death. The after-effects of the invasion of Congress by pro-Trumpists in January 2021 linger still. Even though Biden has been president for 10 months now, Trump adamantly continues to articulate that he did not lose elections. Some Trumpists go as far as believing that Trump will be reinstated as president this year. Some even thought it would happen earlier. Of course, such a reinstatement is not legally viable, but that hasn’t stopped a large part of Trumpists from believing these rumors anyway. For his part, Trump continues to berate Republicans who say, “We have to accept that we lost the 2020 elections, and focus on the future, not the past.” Trump recently launched a tirade against the former New Jersey governor Chris Christie, who made statements in this vein. Christie is, consequentially, a former supporter of Trump.
Several columnists who support the Democrat party are penning articles that say Trump will be re-elected as president in 2024 if he decides to run as candidate. They include the possibility of a Trumpist candidate being elected instead of the man himself. According to these authors, if the Democrats do not resolve their conflicts, the 2024 elections could end in the reign of “Trump 2.0.”
Even though Trump, who pulls the strings of the Republican Party, has not announced he will run as a candidate in 2024, he hasn’t said he wouldn’t run either. So far, no Republican has had the guts to come out and say they would run for president in spite of Trump. Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, who was the U.S. Representative to the United Nations during the Trump era, and Tim Scott, a senator from the same state, are ready to take the stage and put forth their names for the presidential candidacy. However, both announced that their running as candidate was dependent on Trump. Former Governor Chris Christie is challenging Trump, announcing that he alone would decide whether he would run.
In a speech given to the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas, Christie drew the ire of Trump by stating that Republicans had to give up the notion that the 2020 elections were rigged. His book “Republican Rescue: Saving the Party from Truth Deniers, Conspiracy Theorists, and the Dangerous Policies of Joe Biden” will be hitting shelves on November 17. According to the U.S. media, Christie analyzes the damage Trump’s conspiracy theories did to the Republican Party. The 2024 elections may be far off, but it is obvious that we will bear witness to field battles between Republican cliques until then.
