Trump's tough choices

U.S. President Donald Trump does not even want to think about his party losing the majority in the Senate and House of Representatives in the upcoming November elections. Such an outcome may be a "deadly" strike for Trump. When Jeff Sessions became U.S. attorney general, he left a senator seat empty in Alabama. The election of a Democrat candidate in the December 2017 elections in Alabama, the indestructible fortress of the Republicans, was an early warning signal. Presently, both wings of the congress are predominantly Republican. Republicans want to win the elections or at least preserve their majority in one wing of the congress.

A 100-day campaign period has started for the November elections. From now on, foreign policy and trade wars included, every issue is going to be used as an election item. In his 18-month tenure, Trump, through his own unique behavior, displayed that he was a unique president. However, this behavior raises a lot of questions. Such that, even areas of expertise like "Trumpology" formed, scrutinizing Trump's reflexes in the media. Trump's self-expression through tweets is considered very much outside the traditional U.S. government style.

Even the Department of Defense and Department of State are following Trump on Twitter. The whole world watched as Trump brought down Secretary of State Rex Tillerson through his tweets in the North Korea and Qatar issue. Trump, who showed a military attack on North Korea as an option, suddenly took to negotiation and met with Kım Jong-un. He followed a method that excluded the Department of State from Middle East affairs. Secretary of Defense James Mattis was another who was brought down in 12 separate topics that concern military matters. For example, Mattis found out about Trump's decision to stop the ongoing military drills with South Korea later.

In an Australian news report, it was claimed that Trump is planning a military attack on Iran's nuclear facilities soon. Trump informed the Australians about this plan. Journalists asked Mattis whether this report was true. However, Mattis stated that he does not know about the plan. Sources, who recalled that Trump brought down Mattis on many occasions, are suspicious that this report may be true. Yet, Mattis is insisting that the news is a "set up."

During Trump's 18 months in office, more than half the names he brought to the White House either resigned or was fired. The chaos in the White House is confusing the voters too. This might force the Republican Party's hand. And on top of it all, there are the losses caused by the trade wars to producers and consumers. Trump is in contradiction with his party's mainstream leaders in the congress on many topics. The trade wars have disturbed the global businessmen supporting Trump. Billionaire Charles Koch warned that Trump's protectionist policy, which led to the trade wars, will be a disaster for the U.S. Messages from the Koch Group that they may support Democrat candidates show that the elections is a tough test for Trump, who couldn't even make any progress on the wall he had promised to erect on the Mexican border.

One other issue that will force Trump's hand in the elections is the Russia investigation carried out by Robert Mueller. Many figures from Trump's campaign are under the radar in this investigation. Yet, according to Trump and his close circle, the investigation is a deep state conspiracy and a witch hunt. Every day a new claim is being made in the investigation, of which the contents are still unknown. Trumpians are concerned that the extension of the investigation may have an impact on the elections.

In the 2016 presidential elections, Trump had promised that he would withdraw the U.S. from the “stupid wars” abroad. Even though he mentioned this promise from time to time after he became president, nothing changed. The Middle East policies of Trump, who was elected by saying "America First," developed in a way that they can be perceived as "Israel First." All these developments will affect the elections.
