Who does Trump have in his 'war room' as his impeachment looms?

Steve Bannon interpreted the Democrats' attempt to impeach Trump as the first shot fired in the new U.S. civil war. Bannon, who wants to sway the Republican Party to become more far-right and populist under the Trump leadership, sees politics as a war. Bannon was the leading figure in the campaign that won Trump the Presidency in the 2016 election. Bannon, who later joined the team, believed that he had saved Trump’s faltering campaign.

Calling the two-party establishment in Washington “a swamp”, Bannon described Trump as a leader who would “dry” it. The global net of relationships Bannon establishes around “war” and “politics” marks opponents as “enemy fronts” that must be torn down.

According to Bannon, mainstream Republicans are the internal extensions of the enemy. Bannon waged war against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who posed a challenge for Trump. After the two reached an agreement, Bannon, who was appointed as the chief strategist with the title of war-winning general, was thrown out by Trump and neutralized. Bannon's epaulettes had been dismantled and he said that he would continue the war from outside of the Trump administration and in spite of it. “The 2020 elections will take place between the populists of both the Right and the Left,” Bannon says, and is waiting for a signal from Trump for his new assignment.

Trump described the Russian Inquiry conducted by Robert Mueller as a “witch hunt”and a “deep state conspiracy.” In Bannon's world, “deep state” and “swamp” are the same thing. Bannon is not in the war room now, but his shadow looms there. Bannon was replaced by Trump's private lawyer, former mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani.

In the 2016 election, Trump benefited from the publication of questionable e-mails from rival presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party. Now, Hunter, rival candidate for the Presidency Joe Biden's son, has become the most important weapon of the new war due to his shady activities after serving on the board of an oil company in Ukraine. Trump’s request for an investigation into Joe Biden and his son Hunter in exchange for the release of $391 million in U.S. aid to Ukraine triggered a war between the two parties. The Democrat front responded to Trump's move by attempting to “impeach” him.

The House of Representatives is controlled by the Democrats while Republicans have the majority in the Senate. The Senate has the power to block this move, even if the lower House decides to impeach. However, it should not be forgotten that impeachment attempts are ruinous for U.S. presidents.

Other residents of Trump's war room are the Christian-Zionist Evangelicals. Christian-Zionists see the world as a stage of war that will bring about doomsday. According to these circles, the war between Democrats and Republicans is part of the “cultural wars.” Despite all his personal flaws, the reason for their supporting Trump is not to lose these wars at any cost. Therefore, even the appointments in the Supreme Court are war battlegrounds.

Bannon's former companion and Trump's chief policy adviser Stephen Miller declared the impeachment attempt as a deep state operation. Trump's religious advisor, Evangelical priest Robert Jeffress, described supporting Trump as a religious duty in the 2020 election and said, “It's a matter of life and death. Everything is very clear, black and white. It's about the standoff between good and evil. I am afraid that if the Democrats succeed in impeaching the president, it will lead to a rift in the country similar to the Civil War,” Jefress said recently. Trump also retweeted Jefress's threat.

Jay Sekulow, Trump's private lawyer, said that they had repelled the Mueller Investigation through war tactics, and that they were handling the impeachment investigation in the same way. "There are solid teams inside and outside the White House," says Evangelical Sekulow, further blowing the battle horn. The drums are playing, the soldiers are keeping it pure, and the first shot was fired. Needless to say, this American civil war is closely related to the fate of all wars in the world.
