Which military? Which AK Party?

The simmering within the military between 2003 and 2004 was neither fiction, nor a conspiracy nor a trick…

Aytaç Yalman’s recollections, the accusation traffic between Başbuğ-Yalman-Özkök-Doğan and the statements they’ve made, a failed coup d’état, which had been planned and even attempted blatantly by the Chief of General Staff and Chief of the Army (even though they were obliged to take a step back time to time because of the “treacherous” oppression coming from the military structure), is all clear to everyone.

The Gülen-led group-centered forgeries, which overshadowed the essential in the Balyoz case, and the misuse of the Ergenekon case from the point of defendant rights and thus turning into a process, in which the Gülen-led group included their opponents, cannot change this table.

Nobody should fool himself or herself. Senior soldiers have two kinds of records: his internal record and from the point of military structure, and, his record within the society and from the point of democracy….

Responsibilities of the members of the military (even if they shout “our institution which has been dispersed today and is face to face with a conspiracy”, even if they refer to themselves as patriots and heroes between themselves), like politicizing the military, opening the military for military use, being unable to defend the state against the Gülen-led group’s attack within this tense environment (which they are responsible for), will never disappear.

A criminal status will not remove another.

This “crime story” had started in 2003 with the AK Party rulership and continued for 5 years completely.

Let us return to 2007….

The spring of that year had become witness to republic demonstrations. Military brigades, officers and their relatives had taken their place in these demonstrations upon given instructions. Some people, whom are CHP parliamentarians or Ergenekon defendants today, had invited the army to duty in the squares. The kerchief, the kerchiefed wife of the President, a President that is outside the supervision of the military bureaucracy, the possibility of the September 12 Constitution model’s collapse, had alarmed the old Turkey and it’s carrier military, and the military mentality.

This was followed by the April 27 memorial. Following that, the Constitutional Court’s shameful 367 decision had come out. The press, which encouraged this decision, the active and retired generals that sit in front of the computer to have this decision issued, and the political party presidents that were being blackmailed…

There were even some who had continued and maintained this decision, despite the July elections.  With the memorandums they had prepared, the new precautions that might wear out AK Party, and with the shows they have realized on the military ships, and most importantly with the action of closing, which had been opened against AK Party….

Besides, the country had returned from the edge of coup d’états couple of times.

The law amendments, which made it possible for Ergenekon and Balyoz cases to be opened and begin, and paved the way for the civil law in investigations directed at the military field, had become possible under the above-mentioned conditions.

This was the picture of the Old Turkey.

The nation hasn’t forgotten about this.

And never should….

Also, the military should always keep this in mind.

While saying forgetting/keeping in mind, this, is only one side of the medallion…

Seven years ago, I had written down the following note in my column related with the July 2007 elections:

     - For the first time, we had endured an authoritarianism wave, which arrived with the threat-based challenges, which were established on the reactionism and divisiveness danger, lynching attempts and assassinations, and we had taken up a communal and clear position against the military.

     - Maybe for the first time in this country, the “whites”, “liberals”, “left-wingers” and “minorities” had supported a political party, which is outside the segment and tradition they belong to and even is against it, without feeling a complex.

      - For the first time since 1990, different identities and segments in Turkey made close contact with each other through a political party. To see that the disengagements between the communal groups since the 1990’s are being filled around the democracy common ground.

AK Party shouldn’t forget this….

AK Party supporters should be basing on an AK Party, which puts an effort into spreading freedom to every corner and is fixated on civility and civil values, rather than an AK Party, which abstains from settling accounts and explains every opposing situation with a conspiracy theory.

Turkey wants this.
