Sharia court in Britain…

Last week, a news article in The Telegraph newspaper revealed that the war against extremism started by the country in 2008, by employing local units at the national level, had reached a new phase. The government is making preparations for a new draft law. Cameron's statements last week are also confirming this. This new draft law is going further than designating terrorists and catching them. According to the draft law in question, the “sharia courts”, which the Muslims appeal to in order to solve the matters between them, are perceived as “parallel law”. The government states that they've especially observed that the women are aggrieved in the sharia courts on the matters of forced marriage and divorce cases, and that this needs to be prevented. Besides, the draft also brings new precautions while determining that air organizations and local councils are open and defenseless against radicalism. Imams are banned from working with children without the presence of a supervisor. It's being encouraged to report people who show radicalization tendencies at work. “Possessing British values” is regarded as a condition for citizenship. The number of Muslims, who travelled from Britain to Syria in order to join ISIL, reached 700. And 320 of those people returned back to Britain.

The draft law in question should be evaluated with the election results. The world is at a new intersection. A future, in which the old-new conservatives of the Islam world and the conservatives of Europe will be clashing, awaits us. As Turkish Muslims, it's beneficial to read this process properly.

REFUGEES AT EUROPE'S DOOR

With the 1951 Geneva Convention, the specific designation of the refugee status had been fixed. This status is given to people, who are under oppression for his/her race, religion, nationality, political views or being a member of a social group. According to the data of Europe Statistics Office, Eurostat, since 2008, EU countries bestowed the right of sanctuary to more than 750.000 people; however, Europe does not want to open its doors further more. This decision can be perceived, as well as many economic, social and political reasons, as Europe shutting its doors to the poor people from the Islam world and as a tactic for fighting against radicalism. On the other hand, seeing that the refugees are refused entry to some of the ex-Britain colony countries –Malaysia is one of them-, it's clear that this approach will not be limited with the European continent and will include the countries that are its extensions.

HERO OR VILLAIN

As a person that can especially read history well, an elder friend of mine, whose opinions I also value greatly, has recently said, “From now on, I have neither a hero or the opposite” frequently. I've pondered on this after Evren's death knell. He was a villain for us, while a hero for some others. The September 12th coup and the date I registered for the university coincides. We've grown up within a great change and fear atmosphere in Turkey. This coup was the architect of bans and prerogatives in Turkey. A huge government mentality was behind all these, as they had been in other coups. Recently, I've read the coup journals, which include 2004 and 2005, again. I don't know how much of it is true; however, this journal, which contains self-criticisms related with the TSK (Turkish Armed Forces), provides an important database in order to see the point arrived. It perfectly shows that it's not possible to understand Turkey by looking only at a single point and that guardianship is not a one-way while showing its intimate relations with the press, business and art circles. When we look between the lines and the mentality, rather than the incidents, the importance of AK Party's transforming power, which is revealed by the support of the nation, is understood even better. In all the coups, including September 12th, the TSK's position in the forefront should be evaluated from the point of providing the continuity of the Republic's founder elites' guardianship. The TSK, due to its necessity to observe technological developments closely, was the group closest to the West. This closeness brought forward adopting, not just the economic, but also the sociopolitical values of the West as a result of the alliance with Republic's founder elites. The dominance of Westernism, as a result of nationalism and Westernism, brought along disconnection from the nation. The legacy taken over by AK Party was a Turkey that was under the guardianship of the founder elite and its extensions, which are fortified by the September 12th ideology. While evaluating the things done by AK Party, like roads, education, bridge and healthcare, the matter should also be approached from this angle. The matter is not only the mentality of the military. All the guardianship extensions that have acquired power and taken root in the public together with it are all parts of the process. It's beneficial to look at the whole picture, rather than focus on a single man, while evaluating periods and incidents.
