Why Kurds should say yes

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım spoke in southeastern Şırnak province with enthusiasm and said, "Kurds and Turks achieved victory with a common history, Turkey is our common homeland." This is a language that embraces Kurds, places them within the same distinction and accepts them. This language is a lot more different than the language used toward Kurds by Kemalism. Because Kemalism and its old system otherized Kurds' language and religion. It excluded and banned it and wanted to assimilate it.

Kurds got a huge share from every coup that took place in the country. Kemalism did not give Kurds the opportunity to exist within a common distinction with Turks. The nation idea is the common understanding that allows this. The Justice and Development Party (AK Party) cadres that are demanding a new system view Turkey and interpret Turkey through this understanding and want to build the Turkey of the future accordingly. Kurds are going to have presence with their own existence in this Turkey which is going to built on a nation basis. Their language and religion is going to be represented freely. In this nation understanding-based Turkey dream, Kurds are going to be freed of their "wounded conscious" identities. Kemalism's "wounding conscious" and the Peoples' Democracy Party's (HDP) "alienating conscious" is going to end.

Kemalism wounded Kurds' conscious. It insulted and oppressed their identity. An oppressed identity is a wounded conscious, wounded personality. The old Turkey system's bureaucratic oligarchy did this. And the HDP is suggesting to Kurds an "isolating conscious." It is taking them out of the nation entity. It is moving them to a secular, pro-West and materialistic identity. Kurds' Muslim identity is being eliminated. This is why it is applauded and supported so much in the West. Kurds, whose conscious becomes estranged to religion through leaving the nation existence, will become a worse community than Kemalism. They will lose the Muslim identity they have been protecting against all the Kemalist interferences. The moment they stop being part of the nation, they will become estranged from their region and homeland. They will be dragged in to an uncertain and meaningless conflict with the Circassians, Albanians, Arabs and, at most, Turks.

The "long history" in which Kurds protected their identity through becoming a nation within Islam, shares a common fate with Turks. In the Ayyubids, Seljuks and Ottomans, Kurds are a joint nation with the Turks. Turkey is a common homeland, common geography and common identity. They run toward martyrdom in the same trenches in Çanakkale and the national struggle, they are happy in the same victory. Today, they pray in the same mosques, fast during the same month of Ramadan, pray and extend condolences at the same funerals, reach levels of sufism in the same religious movements, listen to the same songs and do the same line dances.

You cannot find another entity on the face of the world that is so intertwined. There are no communities that have become so intertwined with their religion, sect and religious movements and turned in to a single entity. Both Turks and Kurds obey the nation. If the nation is embodied in the Turks and if this is called the Turkish nation, then it is Kurds' duty to be together with this nation. Because the nation of Turks is also conscious of Kurds, recognizes and respects them. But it is difficult to say the same for the neonationalist Turks.

So Kurds, will you be with the neonationalist Turks or the nation of Turks? This is a historic choice as well as a choice of life and death. With this choice, you will either join the system of the neonationalist Turks who have been making life hell for you for a century or you will have the honor and opportunity to establish the new Turkey together with a cadre that has been carrying you in to all of Anatolia in the the last 15 years. The HDP is calling you to be together with the neonationalist Turks and considers you worthy of the continuation of the old system.

AK Party cadres have been the most effective group to date that has legalized Kurds in the eyes of the state in giving them their basic rights. It will continue to be that way from now onwards as well. If you support President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who has legalized you in all of the Black Sea, Central Anatolia and the Aegean, you will have a place in the new Turkey, in the new Middle East. Beyond all this, you are going to have the honor of carrying your thousand-year-old nation existence, which you have lived together with the Turks, to the future with a new spirit of revival.
