Atatürk-Seyit Rıza meeting, the account settling that will transform history

A few months ago, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu stated that he was contemplating announcing some projects regarding the “Alevi issue," but postponed the matter until June 7 as it might be perceived as “an investment for the elections."

The expression –which belongs to him- “The issue of Alevism is not that difficult to resolve as long as it is not exploited by ideological, political and foreign actors" is a clear indicator of how, many of the problems were made insoluble. From Davutoğlu's remarks, I got the impression that the AK Party will make a radical breakthrough regarding the “Alevi issue" at a period when sectarian crises –following ethnic crises- have occupied neighboring countries.

We all know that these issues cannot be reduced to temporary matters such as an election investment, nor can be done for the sake of obtaining more votes. But with the exception of saving the day, we still cannot seem to come up with an approach focused on a sound resolution. It is obvious that even those, who kept the Alevis on their side through an ideological camouflage, have not taken any steps regarding the issue.

Even the German intelligence's work -which has a say in the Alevi associations in Europe- can be traced back to decades and these works may at times reach levels which seriously threaten the domestic security of Turkey.

Exterminate the different ones en masse

For us, the 20th century is a period of disintegration and conflict in various issues, not just Alevism. As Europe was clamping together in the post-World War II period, Turkey was subjected to brutal examples of disintegration projects -which were started with World War I- around the same period. Ethnic differences, sectarian differences and all other differences of identity were presented to us and the countries around the region as reasons for conflict and all types of administrations created throughout the region in the 20th century were designed to destroy these differences.

A quick look at the early years of the Turkish Republic displays a very similar image. Differences would first be obscured and destroyed, followed by the construction of a new society, thus destroying the threats which would emerge from these differences. This approach of the Republic both stemmed from a modernization project and fear.

Because those differences were no longer local and were being exploited as a reason for global playmakers to intervene. For instance, this was one of the reasons for the deadlock of the “Kurdish issue." The matter was no longer an issue between Turkey and the Kurds, and was transformed into an intervention card used against Turkey. The people of this country and this region have long forgotten to sit down and speak with the language of each other. In fact, there was no such thing as “different" and everyone originated from the same lands!

In order not to lose a century, a country…

The traditional reflexes of regional administrations peculiar to the 20th century regarding these issues have always been the same… from Pancasila in Indonesia, to the administrational concept of the Baath regimes in Iraq and Syria. You will see that all of them corresponded to the reflexes of the early Republic. Transforming religion and the society, destroying differences and preserving a strong central administration, and extermination, if unable to transform, have all pervaded in these countries.

I personally think that the political mindset of the AK Party, which made bold breakthroughs regarding the Dersim incident, will make the same breakthrough regarding the Alevi issue. Because we can say that this mindset, which is occupied with building a new country, overcoming division and conflict lines and bringing the society together with all of its differences, has started a reckoning with the pro-tutelage mindset of the 20th century, which is the main reason of all of these issues. Reverting division and conflict winds is the greatest struggle of the 21st century for people who live in this country and this region. If we fail to succeed, we will lose yet another century.

What did Atatürk say to Seyit Rıza?

You will see a “document" in Yeni Şafak today. This is the written report of the confidential correspondence between Seyit Rıza –who was executed following the Dersim rebellion and the bloody assault- and Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic. Seyit Rıza was executed right after this meeting. So that speech contained his final words. When you read it, you will see a noteworthy example of what I mentioned above –the prevalent idea in Turkey and the region to “destroy the ones who are different."

Sabiha Gökçen's name should be erased from the airport

I am sure that you will also want the name of the airport located in Istanbul's Kurtköy district to be changed after seeing the documents which we will be publishing in the upcoming days. We will be making calls for this name change and follow it, and will expect sensitivity from the official circles. It is ruthless for this country to keep the name of such racist people alive up to this day. I don't know about the details of what the government will do regarding the Alevi issue following the elections. However, it is necessary for the government to have a showdown with the history which has excluded Alevis, Sunnis, Kurds and all different identities and has assimilated them and seen them as a threat. The Dersim documents, which we plan to publish after a while and which I had personally witnessed, are written in such a measure that it will freeze a person's blood.

The documents are CHP's obscure past at the same time…

These are CHP's obscure history at the same time. CHP –which heavily bases its vote calculations on Alevi citizens in the upcoming elections- will never dare publish the documents which have been kept secret for years now. Because they are the ones who hid them until today. We must also add that the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), which is also running after Alevi votes, will ever intend to open such documents.

Whoever shows this courage is the one who will be able to transform Turkey. A mentality which has decided on “mass extermination" of a segment of the society will never have the courage to face these sins.

What we want to do is draw attention to destructive projects which have shaped the 20th century and lasted for over a hundred years, and is in reality a regional project, which is currently designed to re-disintegrate the region through sectarian identities and bring differences at odds with each other.

...To make a warning so that we do not experience such sad stories again; so that we can make a tiny contribution to Turkey's efforts to transform this mindset and confront its bloody past.

This is a showdown which will transform history …

As you read these documents and learn about the truth, you will see how the 20th century was a period of a nightmare and how transforming that mentality is the only salvation for all of us.

You see, this is the greatest conflict behind almost all conflicts Turkey has experienced in the past few years. This struggle between those pledging a new societal contract and a new establishment and the local and international fronts which resist this struggle is an account settling that has the potential to transform history.
