Bush: The Crusades Putin: The Holy War

Russia directly entered the war in Syria. The war that was carried out through terrorist organizations has now been progressed to the state level. For two days now, Russia has been attacking the Syrian opposition from air, while the Damascus administration and Iran and Hezbollah attack from land. Moderate opposition is under heavy attack. In reality, the people of Syria are under heavy attack.

The latest intervention aiming to revive the Damascus administration, to strengthen the Iran-Syria axis, stop the transformation of Syria and further strengthen Russia's single fortress in the Mediterranean, is strong enough to change the equation in the entire region. From now on, we will be discussing the showdown of power between the East and West with new statements.

Who did Russia challenge?

We have never seen Russia in such a challenging position in the Middle East since the end of the Cold War. Moscow was involved mostly in protecting its own surroundings and evading the Atlantic pressures aimed at the outside borders of its area of penetration.

The intervention in Georgia opened its eyes. It saw that the West wasn't able to do anything. It annexed Crimea and saw that the West had no cards in its hands. Its source country, Russia, has never been and never will be a country that could be brought down to its hands and knees through an economic embargo.

Russia's third intervention was on Syria. This is the declaration of Russian nationalism, the return to its imperial identity. After Crimea, Ukraine is Russia's world-scale showdown. This means that regardless of any agreement between the U.S. and Iran, it cannot break the Russia-Iran axis.

No different to the U.S.'s Iraq attack

We are face to face with the threat of the war becoming regionalized and in fact globalized. We are witnessing the regionalization of the chaos, the replacement of terrorist organizations by states, a power showdown through organizations followed by the direct intervention of states.

This intervention by Russia and Iran in Syria is no different to the U.S.'s intervention in Iraq. In Afghanistan, the Taliban was put forward, and they invaded. In Iraq, Saddam Hussein was put forward, and they invaded. This time the same method is being used by Russia. It is using the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which is a product of the U.S. and Europe, as an excuse, and intervening in Syria. Just like the U.S. has Saudi Arabia by its side, Russia is siding with Iran to intervene in a Muslim country.

Jihadis are bad, holy warriors are good

At the time Iraq was being invaded, the then U.S. President George Bush had said “This is the Crusades." Now the Russian Orthodox Church is saying “This is a holy war." Those making calls to sensitivity against the “jihadi threat," those who have been occupying the entire world with a fear of Islam and terrorism for the last 20 years, are now entering Muslim lands with calls for a “holy war." The U.S. was doing this yesterday, now Russia is doing the same thing.

If Islam and the Muslim identity, Muslim lands are in question, it makes no difference between Russia and the U.S.; they immediately become the same front. They both side with a couple Muslim countries and step by step invade the region, pushing it to destruction.

Using sectarianism, they divided the entire region into two large camps. While they have these fronts fight among themselves, they make alliances with one side in every invasion and open brand new fronts. The other countries sit and wait for the time they will be invaded by the Mongols.

This region never had a greater enemy than its own mindless people!

This is how they tricked us

The main goal is not to be a source of life to the dying Damascus administration; it is to intervene in the map drafts in the Middle East. Every country that wants its share in the new distribution has taken the leap of faith to achieve this.

The aim is to eliminate the Islamic circle Syria that has gained power. Because they know very well that in the future, this Islamic circle is going to rise above from the organization level to the state level and lay the foundations of a great challenge.

We saw these wars that were waged with the “jihadi" threat excuse in Afghanistan and Iraq, in many regions of Africa; we saw it while it was being implemented through the anti-terror centers established in all Muslim countries right after the end of the Cold War. And finally we see it in Syria.

Why invest in the PKK and YPG?

The U.S., Europe and Russia are all targeting the Islamic identity in the region. Let us analyze why the West is supporting the People's Protection Units (YPG) from this aspect. It is because they see the PKK as the only secular force in the region. This is why they are investing in it. When doing this, they are using it effectively in their proxy wars. The idea behind the PKK and YPG's recent attacks on Turkey might be to weaken Turkey's hand in the intervention aimed at Syria.

How will the U.S., European countries, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, in other words, the countries outside the Russia-Iran front react? These countries, which are the active sides of the Syria issue, need to take a step, determine a stance, and take a position. They at least have this moral responsibility. Is the Syrian opposition going to be left alone? Will all the gains made until now go to waste?

The key point is what was discussed between the U.S. and Russia in the last meeting. Moscow starting its intervention right after these meetings is quite interesting.

In my previous column, I wrote that it is now going to be more difficult to find a solution, the intervention of states will turn Syria into a gangrene, and that the priority of these countries will be to postpone solution, because they are going to wait for regional conditions to mature for “other things".

Russia's intervention might be the first step of this “postponement".

Our countries, our cities

Regardless of what others fight for, for us who live in this region, the truth does not lie in the solution maneuvers continuing behind closed doors. Our countries and cities are being destroyed. Our people are made to kill each other. The 21st century is being turned into a century of disaster for us all.

Hence, regardless of who intervenes in Syria, we perceive that war as an attack on Muslim soils. We regard the chaos they want to place in the vast Muslim geography extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts as an attack on us all.

So we are going to take action not based on Russia or the U.S.'s attitude, but based on this fundamental truth. We are going to talk in our own words and see with our own eyes, not with the truths they impose on us; we are going to take position with the truths of our countries and our region.

Yes, the Syrian war has become regionalized; in fact, it has become globalized. It has expanded from Russia to Iran, Turkey to Saudi Arabia, and Europe to the U.S. We are going to face these realities. We are going to evaluate within this context every movement, every action in our region that is targeting Turkey.
