Is ISIL just terrorism? Then what about the Kurd-Arab war?

The ISIL issue is not just about terrorism.

It is not just terrorism or an organization in a narrow sense where the chaos is limited within the borders of Iraq and Syria.

It might or not be wiped out but regardless it will leave a lasting impact on the region. Another force will replace it if it is wiped out.

It seems like the distorted view of the international system and regional countries will continue to prevail for a long time. The approach to the region’s problems is not one seeking solutions and is of the kind that will lead to chronic crises in the future.

This situation where solutions are lacking is creating serious power vacuums.

This will result in the emergence of many other organizations and forces resembling ISIL.

It would be useful to look past the propaganda wars that are in full flow and carefully examine what is occurring.

We are talking about the rise of some sort of Arab rebellion, Arab uprising or Arab nationalism.

THE ARAB-IRAN SHOWDOWN IS THE HIDDEN REASON

The Arab-Iran rivalry, which dates back years, is the hidden reason behind the clashes in the region. Just like external interventions expand conflict areas in the region and look to open the doors to endless crises, the Iran-Saudi rivalry promotes crises in the same measure.

The regimes of today continue to carry the sickness that manifested itself in the 20th century. Local outbursts are an indicator of the frustration of people with these regimes and their intention of seeking a way out.

These attempts for change via these outbursts by the masses are sabotaged by requests to contain this change through interventions both from within the region and from outside. The international system and these regimes are in total agreement on this topic.

Unfortunately, this attempt by people of the region to seek their own way out can result in images that are wrong, extreme and nerve wracking. This can turn into a flood of rage against the violence and terror, like in the case of ISIL.

However, we can say that these attempts will change in time and adopt a different format and continue on the path of seeking to become structures/powers trying to fill the void.

Yes, ISIL means terrorism but so does the PYD. (People’s Protection Units. The Syrian affiliate of the PKK.)

The notion of what constitutes a terrorist organization cannot be defined based on propaganda, or what you or I think.

KURD-ARAB CONFLICT SHOULD BE PREVENTED

An operation targeting minds is being carried out under the pretext of Kobane. Attempts to sway Turkish public opinion by depicting the PYD as innocent and thus creating sympathy for it will fail. A map looking to produce solutions needs to be drawn up and solution-seeking strategies need to be implemented based on what the masses seek and not based on organizations.

Turkey’s position is rational. It is a balanced stance with regard to the region’s future rather than mere emotional support. Nobody should try to impose a roadmap on Turkey involving the PKK/PYD. Nobody should try to achieve this by inviting terrorism within our borders. This will serve no purpose other than feeding the pain and leading to the non-attainability of solutions.

The solution is for Turkey to create a future with close ties to both Kurds and Arabs. This future is not possible via terrorism and violence but through integrated attempts for the future.

The most vital thing that can be done at this moment is to stop the conflict between ISIL and the Kurds. This is the crux of the matter and some people are especially trying to escalate and deepen the Arab-Kurd conflict. Kobane might not just be a showdown between two organizations. If it stays as just that, it will be easy to overcome, but if it turns into some sort of Arab-Kurd conflict it will result in a chain of crises and clashes. This situation could continue for years.

The same circles are directing and managing those that seek to fuel the Arab-Kurd conflict, and try to force Turkey to take joint action alongside the PYD against ISIL. This is because both actions will result in the same thing.

The Arab-Kurd conflict is a trap set for Turkey, the Kurds and the Arabs. Those who are aware that the future and peace in the region is linked to the close bonds between these three elements are trying to sever the ties and bonds between these three elements. They are trying to sever them in such a way that they will never be able to reconcile.

Those carrying out violence and terrorism within Turkey are unable to see this ugly game being played.

Do not forget that the key to peace in the region is the solidarity amongst Turkey, the Kurds and the Arabs. It should not be permitted that this opportunity for solidarity is sacrificed over organizations. The Kurds need to show the same sensitivity as Turkey is showing in this regard.

LET US NOT RENDER OURSELVES HOSTAGE TO ORAGANIZATIONS

The reconciliation process holds the key to this future. That is why the reconciliation process is being targeted. It is because this project will be an example and set a precedent for the entire region, not just between Turkey and the Kurds.

Remain true to yourselves and don’t adopt a narrow view and approach to events. Don’t drop to the level of organizations like the PYD and ISIL. In a technical sense the issue is not just limited to terrorism.

ISIL is set to stay and even if it is eradicated, something similar, which draws strength from society, will replace it and resort to force. We need to see past terrorism. The operation by the United States and the coalition forces is a mere show and not focused on a result and neither will it be.

There is only one thing that needs to be done and that is to force a process that stops the conflict between ISIL and the Kurds and renders this scenario pointless.

Whatever needs to be done -- without any consideration for the organization or terrorism -- to impede a process that will leave the entire region in ruins, should be done. Whether it be diplomacy, negotiations, or whatever else is required, it should be done. A realistic road map needs to be drawn up and effective mechanisms set up, before succumbing to a formatting of the mind about ISIL.
