The flip-flopper of the South: the only solution is a safe zone

The man is trying to twist major States around his little finger. An organization brings its devious games to the complex Middle East equation and manages to gain the support of the Western world. Furthermore, it also manages to attract the support of many people and circles in Turkey.

A game is being played and it is based on a bad premise.

Salih Müslim, who changes direction and position every day and who himself doesn’t know what he wants to do and only acts based on suggestions he receives from others, has become the “flip-flopper” of the regional scenario being played out on the pretext of Kobane.

ISIL attacks Kobane and these clashes continue for weeks. Arms are overtly provided to the PYD (Democratic Union Party, the Syrian affiliate of the PKK). Turkey’s allies move in concert with a structure defined as a terrorist one by Turkey. Salih Müslim, on the one hand, makes calls saying “rescue us” and on the other, rejects offers of assistance.

He says “no they shouldn’t come” when the Peshmerga are set to go there; he says “no they shouldn’t come” when 1,500 members of the Free Syrian Army are set to go there to assist. He says “we will never accept it” when Turkey says “let us establish a safe zone and thereby guarantee Kobane’s safety as well.”

It smells of hypocrisy and deceit. He only accepts assistance in the shape of weapons from the United States. He belittles Turkey’s humanitarian aid and says it is inconsequential. He is not even grateful when his armed units cross into Turkey for medical treatment and shelter.

HIS CONCERN IS NOT KOBANE!

Salih Müslim’s concern is not Kobane. He is more concerned with guaranteeing his own position as leader rather than Kobane, or preventing the fall of Kobane.

That is also why he is opposed to the deployment of Peshmerga forces. That is why he is opposed to the Free Syrian Army.

This is because if the Peshmerga arrive, his effectiveness will be questioned. If the Free Syrian Army arrives, it will mean the presence of a structure that is involved with Syria’s future. This is what he fears. Even if Turkey secures the region, he will still say he is concerned.

So why didn’t you resist when ISIL was taking over other regions? Why don’t you resist in Kobane without external assistance?

He wants the world to save Kobane and bequeath it to Salih Müslim. Furthermore, he wants all areas south of Turkey’s border to be cleared of other elements and bequeathed to him.

In addition to all this, he is trying to blackmail Turkey in a manner by taking all these incidents and trying to export it to Turkey in the shape of terrorism, acts of urban brutality, and an identity war.

He moved in concert with the Damascus administration since the Syrian issue started. He operated parallel to ISIL. Now some people are trying to put him on a pedestal. Once his hand is freed in the future and he regains confidence in himself he will cooperate with the administration in Damascus again. Even if he denies it due to conjectural reasons, the Syrian administration has already admitted to supporting him.

WHAT TYPE OF ORDERS HAS SALİH MÜSLİM BE ASKED TO CARRY OUT?

It looks like Salih Müslim has been awarded a tender to carry out something, relying on the PYD. He wants to win a war and become a serious regional power based on the presence of such a bountiful source that is Kobane and Kurdish sensitivities, and with the support of the United States, which has openly provided it with armaments.

It might seem like the most vital aspect of all this will be the victory he gains from the clashes in Kobane, but he has played a very dangerous game. Along with the HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party), he tried to push Turkey into a corner and force something via acts of urban terrorism.

Whatever this bid is that Müslim has been tasked with, one of its most crucial elements includes the dirty scenario that played out in Turkey. Thankfully this situation was noticed early and everyone was awake to it.

WHY DID THE UNITED STATES SUPPLY WEAPONS?

It should be carefully noted down that the United States openly provided weapons to a structure viewed as a terrorist organization by Turkey. These notes will come in handy later because this business won’t end here. What happened that the United States and our European allies reached such an urgent conclusion to supply the PYD with weapons when they withheld support from the Free Syrian Army and weakened it while it was facing up to the administration in Damascus?

I don’t believe for one moment that this support is just limited to the situation in Kobane. It is possible to ascertain from the positions they take today what the next stages of this scenario are, and what is planned or is being envisioned.

Ankara, which is aware of all this, needs to urgently neutralize this pressure being applied on the basis of these organizations. It should never be allowed that organizations be able to pressure a State and hold it hostage.

Based on the instructions given to ISIL and the PYD, they want to set up a buffer zone south of Turkey’s border. This means an attempt to sabotage Turkey’s relations and calculations with its southern neighbors. We find ourselves tired after years of talking about the PKK issue or our relationships in the region via London, Washington, or Brussels. We suffered a lot due to this and the reason the region was torn apart was because we attempted to speak for others using their language. We now know that no issue can be solved unless we remove the intermediaries and engage in direct talks.

This is why these intermediaries are now trying to use these organizations and get involved again.

The sending of Free Syrian Army units to the region is a development that would render this negative scenario void. The arrival of the Peshmerga can be seen in the same light. The brains that make Salih Müslim do their bidding are behind his opposition to all these developments.

A SAFE ZONE AND NOTHING ELSE IS THE ONLY SOLUTION

These alone (FSO and Peshmerga units) might not suffice. The northern Iraq-Mediterranean corridor could become a shield that traps Turkey within itself. That is why Ankara needs to implement the safe zone strategy at the earliest opportunity. This project is vitally important both for hundreds of thousands of refugees and for Turkey’s security.

This is the only way to prevent international intervention in the region. If you list all those opposed to the “safe zone” project, you will see the picture that emerges. That is when we will understand the danger even more clearly.

The international players are opposed to a safe zone and are trying to block its creation. Turkey is displaying the maximum sensitivity for the sake of the project’s international legitimacy. However, Turkey will be forced to implement this on its own and it should definitely do so.

There is no more clear-cut legitimacy than it being a country that is sheltering 2 million Syrians. There is no need to look for legitimacy in other places.
