Map for understanding the 'Mediterranean War'

For those who are unable to read the entire column: The name of the crisis we are going through is not the "Syrian civil war," but the "Mediterranean War."

The ongoing war is really taking place because of the newly discovered natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean, where tens of countries have piled their warships and planes, and the Northern Iraqi oil that is yet to be drilled.

That's the summary. Now I will continue with the details for those who are interested.

Toward a map change

I love maps. Always keep a map somewhere to understand the world. To understand the current crisis, you are going to need a map of the Middle East that also includes the Mediterranean. Grab a ruler and a lead pencil.

Find the delta where the Egyptian Nile pours into the Mediterranean. From there, draw a line to the north, all the way up to Antalya. This is the Eastern Mediterranean. Let's shrink the area. Now, draw a line from the island of Cyprus to Latakia (keep in mind that the point your pencil stops on Latakia, the point Turkey borders Syria, is where the Bayır-bucak Turkmens are located).

This time, draw a line from Cyprus to the south, to the coast of Egypt's Sinai peninsula. This square shaped sea area containing the coasts of Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Gaza, Egypt and Cyprus, is called the "Levant."

A discovery that will change balances in the Middle East

Place your finger on this region. In a 2013 report, the Geological Research Institute of the United States stated that there are 3.45 trillion square meters of undiscovered natural gas in this minute sea area under your finger.

This gas was found in Israel's Haifa, Tamar and Leviathan regions, Egypt's Zohr region (Sinai waters) and in points between Cyprus and Latakia.

This amount is big enough to change the fate of the countries in the region, the balances in the Middle East. That's not all. This discovery also shows scientifically that the Eastern Mediterranean is a fossil center and since natural gas was found, there could also be oil. So, it is a discovery that will multiply one's wealth.

Now let's get back to the map. Starting from Latakia, let's draw another line over Syria, Northern Iraq and Iran, bypassing the Turkish border, to the Caspian Sea. Below this line, all the way to Yemen in the south, is the world's richest oil and natural gas area. Now, the Eastern Mediterranean is also included in this area. The world needs the oil and gas in this region.

Although the land is small, those who divided Ottoman lands after World War I (the Sykes-Picot Agreement), left us a region that is bursting with oil and natural gas, yet we cannot find enough to fulfill a need. While many countries will strike it rich from the newly found gas in the Eastern Mediterranean, we and North Cyprus (because it is not officially recognized) do not get a drop of the share. What kind of ruthless sharing of the region is this?

Energy, cause of all crises

Now let us analyze the civil war in Syria, the jet crisis with Russia, the Mosul crisis with Iraq, the crises with Iran and even the military coup in Egypt again, this time through the map.

The natural gas found in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Northern Iraqi oil yet to be fully drilled, are so rich that everybody sent their warships, planes and troops to this area to get a share of the discovered treasure.

The issue is not an issue of Daesh, Al-Nusra, Shiites, Sunnis in the Syrian civil war. The issue is the drilling of this oil and gas, getting a share of it, building new pipelines and plants to carry them and deciding which countries' companies will do all this work.

If the oil and gas found is carried to Europe through Turkey, both our power and strategic significance will increase enormously, and we will also make money. Which country would not want this? This is what we are dealing with now.

Let's understand the issue correctly and label it correctly

All kinds of operations are being carried out to exclude Turkey and oil-rich Northern Iraq (Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Masoud Barzani), to minimize their share, and to force them to make the concessions wanted.

Believe me, the downed jet is also a part of this, as is the troop crisis in Mosul, the PKK's terrorism, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) in Rojava, the parallel organization issue as well as the claims of dictatorship.

That is not all. The Bayır-bucak Turkmens in Latakia are on the most strategic hill of the discovered gas field on the ground. Everybody is astonished, wondering why Russia would bomb this area. The Turkmens are being forced to migrate so they do not gain any authority in the new mini state in Latakia, which is going to be the energy hub of the future planned to be established for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Let's understand the issue correctly and label it correctly. What we are witnessing is the Mediterranean War. The reason for this war is the newly found gas and oil reserves. All strategies are based on this. Do not dwell on the PKK, Daesh, the parallel organization and the ditches that are being dug. Look at the whole picture and map.
