Will the Turkish Armed Forces enter Syria for a safe zone?

The last time I went to Kilis was in February, for a television program. We shot a three-hour program at the zero-point were Syrian refugees were located without being killed, and then went to Kilis, a city full of life.

The city with a local population of 93,000 has grown into a city of 220,000 people, with the migration of 127,000 Syrian guests. This means there are more Syrians than Turkish citizens in the city. Although the population has dramatically increased and the air is filled with car and motorbike noises, the people of Kilis share their lives in harmony with their Syrian brothers and sisters.

JUST LIKE DECLARING WAR...

Kilis, a city that has shouldered the burden of the Syrian war with great generosity, is lately experiencing very difficult days.

There is an undeclared war against Turkey in Kilis.

Daesh is randomly firing Katyusha missiles from the other side of the border and killing innocent people. They have fired 46 missiles since January 18; 17 people have lost their lives, and 61 others have been injured.

WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BORDER?

Twenty days ago, Syrian groups left Azaz and recaptured about 10 villages from Daesh and a Turkmen town called Çobanbey on the border, yet they could not hold them. Daesh recaptured the places in a short time after deploying 600 Daesh militants from Raqqa.

they have been attacking Kilis with missiles from these villages and towns. As these missiles are fired from vehicles on the go, it is not easy to detect and destroy them.

THE
AGENDA IN ANKARA

The missiles fired into

have been on Ankara's agenda since the start of the week.

This was the major issue discussed at the Security Summit led by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, and the Cabinet meeting that followed. Three government officials have confirmed that additional troops and equipment are being sent out to the area.

Making a statement after the Cabinet meeting on Monday, Parliament speaker Numan Kurtulmuş said that the border would be guarded with UAVs and that more effective methods would be used.

However, deploying additional troops on the border might not be a lasting solution to the issue.

WILL THE TURKISH ARMED FORCES GO BEYOND THE BORDER?

Now let's get to the real issue...

On Monday Kurtulmuş was asked whether the Turkish Armed Forces' (TSK) ground troops would cross the border. Kurtulmuş gave a short response: “All necessary measures are being taken, the issue has been discussed.”

This is important.

Kurtulmuş's response and the information we gathered

that the TSK are seriously thinking about establishing a safe zone beyond the border.

There are two options to completely solve the issue.

1- To directly intervene beyond the border with ground troops; to permanently exterminate the threat there and to physically build a safe zone.

2- To equip the Syrian opposition that has been working with Turkey and support them while they wipe out Daesh.

Some resources in Ankara say that an operation will be conducted on Daesh without crossing the border.

Although the second option is more likely, the latest developments have shown Turkey that these groups have limited power in Turkey's war.

Lately, the option of Turkey entering Syria alone and establishing a safe zone beyond the border is being discussed.

The latest events in Kilis have secured Turkey's hand in terms of the “right to self-defense.”

Since

there has been a point that has been considered in the context of international law.

And that is:

It is sufficient for Turkey to declare to the United Nations Security Council that it will use its right to self-defense.

International law gives this right to all countries, including Turkey. It is evident that Turkey does have enough evidence to make this move.

Although there are risks in the case of Turkey entering Syria, Russia is not expected to respond to Turkey.

The region is under Daesh control and thus is a threat to all international actors, including Russia.

Prime Minister Davutoğlu's meeting with Obama next week should be followed attentively.

The conclusion of that meeting might herald a new period beyond the border.
