U.S. President Donald Trump's speech at the UN General Assembly is important in many respects and should be carefully analyzed. For a long time now, the "axis shift" in American politics was clearly observed; this time the U.S. president, on an official platform, explained America's views to the whole world.
Trump used a language that threatened the whole world before the participants. The speech was both very dull and inappropriate in terms of content and style. The UN General Assembly is not a platform to discuss the national problems of the United States, but the U.S. president has attempted to bring the whole world into line by looking at problems of his own country, without even uttering a word about the common problems of humanity. In the speech that prioritized America's interests, no global theme to bring all of humanity to a common ground came to the fore.
There were so many threatening elements in Trump's speech. We can talk about a situation in which America is having problems with almost all continents. There is no doubt that this is a deliberate act. There would be no need to dwell on it if we had been confronted with the unreasonable attitude of a madman. But we can say that America wants to establish the new era through an empire of fear. Turkey was not directly among the countries that he threatened, but he saw no harm in sending messages on issues that concern Turkey. He particularly advocated the terrorist groups he supported and said that he would continue to exploit them. Of course, this was an implicit message to Turkey.
When Trump bragged about himself as the most successful president of America towards the end of his threatening speech, laughter broke out. Trump was at a loss on how to react to such a situation. He wanted to build an empire of fear and would do so with a speech that would shock participants, but this effect was nullified when the United Nations erupted in laughter. Trump was also at a loss as to do in the face of such an incident not anticipated by speechwriters. He said he didn't expected this reaction. Perhaps this sentence was the most inartificial part of Trump's speech. The fear spell was broken at that moment and he couldn't get what he wanted.
Of course, Trump's threats are very important. The U.S. is the most powerful country on earth today in economic, military and technological terms. If the most competent person in this country threatens countries and geographies, religions and civilizations, nobody has the right to underestimate this development. These threats are more important than ever at a time when umbrella organizations at the level of nations and countries are not functioning and where the international system isn’t mentioned. It is hard to talk about any rule or power that will stop America. However, these facts were already known, and since the United States abused rules and international organizations in its own favor, it was not possible to clearly articulate the many negative aspects experienced. In a sense, this was the peace envisaged by the League of Nations and United Nations. The UN and other partner institutions operated in line with U.S.-U.K.-Israeli interests. Since 1918 heretofore, what happened is simply that.
The answers to this question were revealed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in his speech. Erdoğan articulated his vision of a fair and equitable world. In fact, I don't know if there is any other example through which the dream of a new world is expressed with such rhetoric by non-Western ideologies and societies. It is clear that this voice is very powerful. Erdoğan's voice is of a kind that can set secluded and crowded streets of the whole world into motion. I believe we will see this over time.
Let us leave the other inconsistencies of both speeches for another article. Because both speeches were the voices of two separate and opposite worlds. One was based on the desire to protect the interests of countries like America-Britain-Israel and France, and to send the rest of the world to hell, and the other was the verbalization of the ideal that we can co-exist in peace.
The United States clearly announced that it ignored all institutions including the U.N., which does not protect the interests of the U.S., whereas Turkey recalled 1918. Erdoğan stated that these institutions were the product of the balances formed after 1918 and were formed to protect the interests of certain countries. He said that all the evils that prevail on earth arise from this unfair and inequitable system, and that we should change it and build a new order.
The showdown between Turkey and the United States left its mark on the UN General Assembly. But it was like no one heard a thing. There is a great silence.
