The state in Anatolia and Syria

Two great powers of the world ignited a war with each other.

One of them was sprawled in the northwest, while the other’s homeland was in the South.

Not only the ones fighting at the moment, but also, their previous administrators and upcoming successors had and would continue to fight for these lands.

In a sense, this war was the colossal one in history; almost all of the powers of the region were included in this coalition established by the sides.

Errors, games, courage and of course, the power of alliance designated the result of the war, which can contain different steps in a tactical and strategic sense.

Ultimately, the historic Kadesh Agreement, which is the first international agreement with a document, had been signed.

This war was between the Hittites, who had their capital at Çorum right in the middle of Anatolia, and the antique period’s New Egyptian Kingdom, which thrived around the area of present day Egypt.

The Syrian lands between the two great powers had been a buffer zone for centuries. The Amorites, who lived in those lands, left the Hittites’ side and joined the Egyptian Kingdom’s side. This was the visible reason behind the war.

However, the actual reason was both sides’ belief that they could eliminate each other.

In the final period, wars and tussles were increasing between them.

Even though the Hittites triumphed in the first phase, the successor’s Egyptian troops made things even to a certain scale.

In the end, as the Egyptian armies retreated, the Hittites lost the power to chase them; thus an agreement had been signed.

All this happened around 3,300 years ago.

Also, Egypt’s and the Hittites’ using the small countries in Syria as a buffer zone, the marching of the strengthened one against the other and thus increase its sovereignty, dates back to maybe 5,000 years.

In brief, it’s such an unfortunate geography that the Syrian lands had been used as the buffer zone of the great powers around it for almost forever.

That’s why the happenings nowadays are not surprising.

Today, there are too many powers and countries clashing in Syria…

Undoubtedly, this is not Syria’s faith only; anyone in Anatolia cannot establish their sovereignty, borders and futures independent from Syria.

It doesn’t matter what anyone says on this matter; the 5000-year-long history of the region states it.

How you ensure this, how much of it you can cope with, what your skills are in finding different methods, how other powers setup the game… Where do you stand in these fictions? To what extent can you design and actualize a new fiction by breaking those above?

There are many options; however, the only unchangeable reality is the inevitable relation between Anatolia and Syria. Since we know a tiny bit of Seljukian and a little bit of Ottoman history, and, since that period passed under the dominance of Seljukian and Ottomans, and the lands, on which Iraq, Palestine, Jordan and Syria have now been placed, that had already stopped being the most important conflict zone in that period, it’s not possible for us to understand what happened when that opportunity has been removed.

Today we are witnessing the arguments over the temporary transfer of the Tomb of Suleyman Shah and Saygı Police Station.

However, this is a never-ending struggle and relation.

We shouldn’t think about war and conflict when we say struggle.

Likewise, the transfer in question is a step that had been taken to avoid war or conflict.

In September 2014, while giving a briefing to the Cabinet at the Council of Ministers, the Chief of General Staff had presented the alternatives of the previous night’s operation, down to the details of the personnel number, time, vehicle and weapons.

Thus, this recent operation is neither something new nor the Syria politics, relations of any country in Anatolia is something changeable in a couple of years.

Confusing our present time and what’s happening in front of us as a momentary reflex, and not knowing how many thousands of years are the reason behind this, is having us all go round in circles.
