Being the UAE's friend is far more dangerous than being its foe

Nowadays almost everyone knows about the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) hostile attitude towards Turkey. The UAE stands against Turkey in every field and tries to halt its operations. We are not talking about legitimate rivalry here. We are talking about hostile action that includes all sorts of immoral, foul games, plots, and maneuvers. It is generally striving to sabotage Turkey's top humanitarian and positive policies through most illegal and immoral steps.

Everyone knows how Turkey built a state in Somalia, which was rife with chaos and instability and bedridden with grave humanitarian crises, with all its institutions. While there wasn’t hide nor hair to be seen of the UAE or any other country until this state was built, we only started to see the UAE’s “stability operations” after Turkey built a state there and established stability to an extent. The UAE has been detected to finance certain suicide acts in cooperation with Somalia’s terrorist organization al-Shabaab to this end.

The same is in question for the UAE’s operations in Syria. Turkey has no other aim but to ensure stability in its own region, to ensure the security the people of Syria deserve, and displaced Syrians the opportunity to return to their homes. Unlike the UAE, it never intended to take over Syria through the groups it underhandedly supports and establish its own order there. On the contrary, the UAE wanted to cement chaos there, and thus form a circle of chaos around Turkey and siege it.

The same attitude and operations manifested in Libya and, of course, through the coup attempts it supported in Turkey conducted by the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), and others.

So, when did the UAE carry out or start to carry out all these operations? It was doing it at a time when all seemed to be roses and butterflies with Turkey, during times when relations between the two countries were normal. In other words, the “stabbing in the back while smiling in your face” attitude, is the general style of the UAE, or rather the sons of Zayed.

You might ask if this attitude is toward Turkey alone. Frankly, considering its latest politics between Iran and Saudi Arabia, it can be said that this attitude of the UAE is not specific to Turkey alone.

UAE Foreign and International Cooperation Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan recently held a video conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. The UAE state news agency reported the official statement of this meeting as a discussion of the political developments in the region as well as the new Covid-19 pandemic. However, there were also statements with respect to a strategic alliance with Iran regarding this matter.

It is a little strange that they are pursuing such strategic relations while there is clear hostility known by all between the two countries, and despite the deep conflict between them upon Iran’s occupation of three UAE islands.

This should not be misunderstood. We essentially defend that all Muslim countries should have great strategic ties with no discrimination among them. In other words, if only Islamic countries could easily solve all the problems among themselves, establish unity and stability, and hand in hand solve the Islamic world’s chronic backwardness issues, and problems surrounding education, starvation, unemployment, good management and freedoms. Therefore, we would be nothing but overjoyed if two Islamic countries that are at odds reconciled. However, if these two Muslim countries were building these relations in pursuit of new plots, evil alliances, we cannot possibly expect any good to come from it.

Let us recall: The 13-article list of demands the four-nation alliance led by the UAE and Saudi Arabia announced against Qatar included Doha’s trade relations with Tehrab at the very top. The UAE had put forward Qatar’s trade relations with Iran to justify imposing sanctions against it. However, the UAE’s own trade volume with Iran during the previous year was recorded as $13.5 billion according to Iran Customs Organization data. We hope it will develop even further; we have no issues with this. The more trade between Islamic countries the better. But why accuse Qatar for this?

The UAE continued to use this trade relation, for which it accused Qatar and considered as a justification to impose sanctions, as grounds to attack Oman when the Omani foreign minister held a meeting with his Iranian counterpart. UAE media and Mohammed bin Zayed’s former adviser Abdul Khaleq Abdullah, who is also one of the important emirs, said on Twitter that this meeting will yield no good results for the region’s countries.

Such inconsistencies in the UAE’s relations inevitably brings up questions regarding its loyalty towards its true ally, Saudi Arabia. Will Saudi Arabia be the next target for the UAE, which is currently pursuing strategic relations with Iran, a country whose hostility towards Saudi Arabia is no secret?

Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen directed the guided missiles they bought from Iran towards Riyadh and are constantly targeting the city. Though it is in much closer proximity, there has been not a single Houthi missile directed towards UAE targets to date.

Will the strategic cooperation and rapprochement with Iran also include a reconciliation with the Houthis, who are constantly striking Saudi targets? In such a case, who will protect Saudi Arabia, the UAE’s closest and vital alliance from Abu Dhabi’s evil pursuits and plots?

Furthermore, who will protect the UAE, which is swimming in such dangerous waters? Such characters eventually self-destruct. However, let us warn its friends before it all blows up.
