The most meaningful answer to July 15: Transition to presidential system

The fact that the second anniversary of the July 15 failed coup attempt coincides with Turkey’s transition to presidential system a meaningful coincidence. These two processes are totally opposite processes.

To be more precise, the will that attempted to conduct a coup on July 15 and thus impose itself on the nation and disregard the will of people is completely opposite to the will that led to the presidential system today.

It is much more appropriate to regard July 15 as the day of the emergence of the people’s resistance and awakening against this attempt rather than calling it a coup attempt. Of course, the emergence of goodness is sometimes only possible through emergence of an evil which sets the stage for the goodness and causes it to emerge. Heroes do not come to the fore unless there are no enemy forces.

The fact that Turkey's history is full of the epic stories of heroes and heroism is directly proportionate to the fact that Turkey is flooded with evil and villains, and exposed to constant attacks. If it was not for the coup attempt of July 15, Ömer Halisdemir would have been predestined to live his routine life with concealed heroism, grandeur and bravery.

All evil is a test to reveal people's goodness, character, and beauty. The more crucial, difficult, and tough the test is, the more heroic and good events emerge. Of course, that does not necessarily mean that this rule will have the same effect on everybody. Some succeed in this test, whilst others do not.

July 15 created a spectacular arena for the public to reveal their heroism just like it allowed heroes to come to the fore and thus the Turkish people proved their goodness, heroism, and unity among Turks, Kurds, Arabs, Cherkes, Alevis, Sunnis, the secular or religious sections coalescing and challenging death. Undoubtedly, there were some occasions on that night that heroism came to the fore through individuals, but the true heroism was that of the nation.

The putschists were so assured that people would be afraid and easily suppressed, that they would opt for evil instead of goodness and bow to gun barrels, that they would opt for a dishonorable life against an honorable death, that they would lock the doors and cower at home, that they would listen to a coup declaration with anxiety and timidity, and comply with it accordingly.

The silly and stupid looks of one of their spokesman when he heard that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was still alive and had called the public to show resistance was an expression of deep disappointment due to failure of their expectations of the Turkish people. At that moment, we saw clearly what kind of frame was deemed fit for the Turkish nation by such disappointment.

"Turkish people will not resist, they will not know where to hide themselves since they have only completed shortened military service through payment." What an imprudent insult against Turkey!

However, the Turkish people have always had faith in their hearts. They cared for their honor, and had no intention of surrendering their will to anyone. The occupation of their country and the oppression of these putschists were worse than death for them. Even if they knew nothing of tanks and guns, their faith was more than enough for them to master all military training in a matter of seconds. For what good use is a tank if they have the faith in their hearts and at their disposal to extinguish hell fire?

The strength and training they needed while they were unconditionally rushing upon the call of their commander-in-chief, their leader, was a truth they utilized. We all lived that moment together. I had a feeling that verses of Surah Al-Fath (Conquest) were descended to describe that moment:

“It is He who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their [present] faith. And to Allah belong the soldiers of the heavens and the earth, and ever is Allah Knowing and Wise.” (48:4)

The failure of the coup should not mislead anyone. Unfortunately, there are even some people who consider it unimportant even though it was planned in detail, took years to make all preparations, and was attempted to be staged by the most dangerous organization on earth (FETÖ). Some even claimed that the coup was planned by those who were the very target of the coup. There were quite a people more than willing to jump at such a claim. The majority of these people are supporters of putschists and the rest are those who naturally gravitate toward conspiracy theories. Where should we place our so-called European "allies" (!), who see the facts yet entertain conspiracies?

There were two different wills. The will that emerged victorious at the end of the night of July 15, which is building Turkey today, and doing it well! What we witness today is a manifestation of the nation's will. So we are not just witnesses, we are participating in this process, we adopt it and we become a part of it.

A self-assured, arrogant babbler of the coup on July 15 said: "We will not let you become president." The nation, who was the victor and hero of July 15, gave the necessary reply to this motormouth and made Erdoğan president.

Greetings to those who honorably succeeded in the test of July 15 and who took their achievement a step further by rebuilding Turkey.
