'We have reduced our foreign trade deficit in 13 of the last 20 months,' says Turkish trade minister

Türkiye recorded its highest-ever January exports at $21.2 billion, a 5.8% increase over the same month in 2024, according to preliminary data announced by the country's trade minister on Monday.

The figure is the highest ever reported in January, Omer Bolat said at a press conference in the northeastern city of Trabzon.

Turkish imports rose 10.2% to over $28.8 billion, resulting in a $7.7 billion foreign trade deficit during the same period, he said.

“We have reduced our foreign trade deficit in 13 of the last 20 months," the minister noted, adding that exports covered 73.4% of imports in January.

Exports to the EU's 27 member countries, Türkiye's main trading partner, totaled $8.9 billion last month.

As of January, exports in the past 12 months totaled $263 billion, up 2.6% from the same period in 2024, while imports amounted to $346.7 billion, up 2.2%.

The foreign trade deficit stood at $83.7 billion, down 14.8% over the same period.

Exports covered 75.9% of imports over the past 12 months, the minister said.

Türkiye set an all-time monthly export record in May 2024 with $24.1 billion.
