Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar tops global tourist destinations

Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar topped the list of most popular destinations across the globe. Istanbul is not only one of Turkey’s most popular tourist hotspots, but also of the world. The Grand Bazaar is just one example of Turkey’s long and illustrious city, and sightseeing around Turkey is sure to impress even the fussiest visitor.


Grand Bazaar, Istanbul: This tourist destination attracts 91.25 million visitors each year. The Grand Bazaar has experienced earthquakes, fires and demolition but has always been restored and developed. It has 11 gates and 29 inns.

Others on the list included Mexico’s Zócalo, Central Park and Times Square in New York and Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Florida, among other hotspots across the globe.


The Zócalo, Mexico City: This ceremonial Aztec plaza hosts 85 million annual visitors. It is often the location of military parades, cultural and political events, concerts, exhibitions, fairs, and public art installations. In 1987, UNESCO granted the Zócalo World Cultural Heritage status. In 1813 it was declared as one of the world's greatest squares, measuring 830 by 500 feet. It can host up to 100,000 people.

Times Square, New York: Times Square, which is known for its lively entertainment, Broadway shows and numerous shops, attracts 50 million visitors a year.

Central Park, New York: This location hosts 40 million visitors on a yearly basis. Central Park is almost always in movies set in New York, and its greenery makes visitors feel like they are in a separate universe amongst the skyscrapers.

Meiji Jingu Shrine, Tokyo: The shrine attracts 30 million tourists annually, and is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Japanese history says that Emperor Meiji modernized Japan in the 19th and 20th centuries. Built in 1914 after the death of the emperor in 1912, this temple was built in his name.

Niagara Falls, New York and Ontario: 22 million tourists visit Niagara Falls each year to see the world’s only waterfall that flows backward. The water that splashes on surrounding rocks flows backward. The Canadian side of Niagara Falls is more developed than the U.S. side.


Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, Orlando, FL: This magical site attracts 18.6 million tourists on a yearly basis, and is the largest entertainment complex in the world.

Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris: This cathedral hosts at least 14 million visitors every year, and is a medieval structure that is among the largest and most famous church buildings in France and the world.

St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City: The Italian Renaissance church in Vatican City, the papal enclave within the city of Rome, attracts 11 million tourists yearly. Its completion took over 150 years.

Great Wall of China: This fortification has nearly 11 million visitors every year. It was built using stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials to protect the Chinese states and empires against the raids and invasions of various nomadic groups.
